ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE – NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.

A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.

Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.

Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.

The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.

The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Wouldn't Alberta have been so delighted in her lifetime to have known that another American would come along and pay her such a fabulous homage?
  • Julie - Lady Hinchingbrooke - I am a museum director and curator in Florida and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this "curation" video. Shows splendidly the work and detail that goes into curating even a small exhibition. I am very impressed with the display, especially since you are an amateur. Congratulations! I can't get to the UK until next summer. Hopefully you will still have the exhibit up.
  • Julie, everyone should be very proud of the work you’re doing for the Montagu and Sandwich families..
  • @ej12349
You did an absolute amazing job on the exhibition of Alberta Montague. You should be very proud of all the hard work you put into it and the amazing journey that brought you here. Congratulations Julie!
  • Julie and Malcom you have done a wonderful job of curating this exhibition. It brought a tear to my eye seeing the photo of Alberta and wondering how proud she would be, knowing her love for archiving, that you have produced this exhibition on her behalf. I am sure she is there in spirit with you.
  • I'm visiting Mapperton and the exhibition with my daughter tomorrow (bank holiday Monday), can't wait!
  • Julie, you've taken your passion for Luke's American ancestor to a new level with countless hours of hard work and dedication and even vulnerability to create a tribute fit for her and the family. The thread that you, uniquely, are able to pull, of her thoughts and habitual record-keeping into the AI spoken iteration, brings her to life in a very touching and uplifting way. I congratulate you and hope you are so satisfied with the exhibition and that you may bask in the visitors' excitement.
  • I can see Julie being a future hologram on tours 100 years from now explaining some of the things she has done at Mapperton! The AI is awesome.
  • As an educator, I find the AI of Alberta fascinating. What a tribute!
  • I saw the walk thru with Julie yesterday and it was marvelous. The room is spectacular, and the exhibit is so well thought out and executed. Julie, you have done a tremendous job and I'm sure Luke, the Earl and Countess are so proud. I've been transcribing some documents from the mid to late 1800's and ordered acid free tissue paper, a box and a roll of tape and it was not inexpensive. Glad I was able to support even minimally to this project. Just one last thing: I have envy in my heart for the picture of Julie's desk in the muniment room.
  • @vansmom123
The Monday May 10 writing says, “to the Abbey for final coronation rehearsal”
  • Julie, Your Joy, Energy and Commitment to everything you do will go down in History as a remarkable Lady that contributed so so much to the preservation of the Hinchingbrooke Dynasty. Thank You.
  • The AI answer was amazing what an incredible function of AI it really does help you understand her as a person. What an incredibly intelligent woman
  • Julie, if I may be so informal, you are truly a force of nature! What would Mapperton do without you at this point in its history? You are the ultimate American Vicountess…you are SAVING Mapperton🙏🏼 I am in utter AWE of your determination, your never-give-up-ingness!!! Absolutely inspirational!! You and Luke, (again, please forgive the informality), are so very special together💞
  • @joeswife
Fan from Oregon here. I'm a genealogist and really appreciate the work and care you've put into bringing this amazing ancestor to life. I'm quite sure Alberta approves! I'm currently working on a project to document my grandfather's WW2 service. He, like many of his generation, didn't talk much about the war. Eventually, I'll be self-publishing a small book to give to everyone in the family so his this important part of his life is known by his descendants. Wishing you the best of luck with the exhibit. I'm sure it'll be a hit!!
  • @AmynAL
I’m always so sorry your time on camera is over. Especially so is this episode. Thank you so much for allowing us to watch the details for this amazing exhibit. I do wish I could be there in person. You are a very remarkable young woman Julie. Well done!
  • That AI is really awesome! And the display is amazing!! I also wanted to give my two cents as a sewist for your next display. As farmers age they break down (you know this) especially silk. I’m not sure how museums do it but there are ways we use the side and waist seams to add ribbons to take the weight off the shoulders for hanging garments. You’ll see this on modern wedding or formal dresses, sweaters, etc. You might want to consider it or look into it to keep those beautiful dresses you keep uncovering in tact! You are such a delight for this family, finding and organizing all of this stuff. Old and “wealthy” families often forget that attending a coronation isn’t commonplace! Lol any family history is special and sometimes having these relics from the past being that past to life!
  • Excellent! A quick tip for rehanging the boards (for next season, perhaps). If the hidden fixtures in the bookcases are hooks rather than screwed-in eyelets, re-thread the fishing line as loops with the sections along the tops of the boards running along the back; this requires just one knot per baard, will allow you to take down and re-hang the boards very easily each season, and make it simple to level each one.
