How To Build An Adobe Brick Wall

Published 2020-11-14
I build an adobe brick wall on the south side of my hugelkultur greenhouse. It will support a Tinktube steel framed roof structure with a plastic covering. That will be constructed in the next video.

  • Might be fun to apply a lime plaster render to weatherproof the wall. Hydrated lime powder is burned at a lower temperature than OPC (Portland) and re-absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it cures, which makes it nearly carbon neutral. 50lb bags are often available at building supply stores. Although type S hydrated lime is often used as an admix for concrete, I've had some success just slaking it to a putty for a few days (or weeks) before using it as weatherproofing on a cob oven.

Ahhhh, the critters... Yep, that's what I keep thinking about! I think it's awfully nice of you to build such nice quarters for all the creepy crawlies, and other bigger critters too! But then playing in the mud IS good for the soul! ♡♡♡ Lovin the look of that wall ! ♡

What about mixing some biochar to make that clay more dark. Maybe make few test pieces to see if it absorbs sunrays better and how does it affect the clay. Also super jealous about that red clay you can just dig up from your yard so easily 👌

I have a friend who throws pots, and has a kiln. He says, you have to dry clay completely, out of the sun, before firing.

Version 2 of the green house is going to be a MAJOR upgrade! The adobe is going to look great and it will be easy to maintain if the weather does get to it.
  • Its refreshing to see your starting to move beyond the rocket stove. I think you've perfected that subject. Keep up the good work.

Wow lots of hard work but that wall is FABULOUS 😍

Wow! Great push and really looking 👍 To keep your wall from being weathered down, consider making the roof overhang at least 10-20cm on all sides! Those Adobe bricks are super cool but so labour intensive, shame if they witther away during all the rain 🌧 😑 as always great job. Looking forward to next Saturday.

You did a great job G.S.! 10/10 That wall has got character!! Just like the guy building it!! So you didn't fancy a trip to the Mexican border to pick up some second hand bricks now that the wall is coming down?? You don't have to answer the latter point! Sometimes my humour goes off beam G.S. I'm guessing your wall will last much longer than the Mexican wall and dare I say! The Great Wall of China? Your wall is Great G.S.! keep the good work up. Sorry about the humour 😁😁

Tom, you are an amazing construction engineer. I’m trying to decide if you like playing with wet clay as much as or more than fire. Your wall looks beautiful. Is it porous enough to accept a waterproofing material. I have a terracotta chiminea they I drove out to New Mexico to purchase. I was warned that it was only sun dried and would eventually become porous and probably shatter during Ohio winters if allowed to become damp/wet before freezing. My solution was to rub its outer surface with gulf wax (used for canning) when it was hot. The wax melts and is absorbed into the chiminea. It sheds water and has lasted over two decades. I cannot say the same for a clay potted plant. Perhaps liquid paraffin could be sponged on the exposed surfaces. Alternatively, there are several peanut processing plants in Georgia. You may help them to recycle some contaminated or rancid peanut oil. It is safe for environment and would make a terrific waterproofing agent. In the 80’s I was driving a Sentra diesel and found a variety of fuel alternatives. Stay safe my brother, good seeing you wearing your gloves and shoes. Wishing you and your family peace, health and happiness.

What a great Adobe brick wall build! Love it. Thanks for the video, Tom!

The wall looks great. I'm curious though, on how the side of the bricks against the soil will be protected from moisture there? There will be natural moisture....rain and any watering you do for the plants. It might be good to think about how to protect all the sides from moisture. I love watching you work so fast! Doesn't take any time at all to get your projects done! 😂 How's your other building going? The one with the wall of ideas and corner made of doors? It'd be great to see how this project is coming along.

Yay! Great job Tom! Can't wait to see the walls of your new greenhouse :)
