I remember hearing about one woman's story living in Mosul just after coalition forces retook it. When ISIS took the city an ISIS commander murdered the woman's husband who had worked for the Iraqi army. Right after the murder the ISIS commander violated the new widow and forced her to marry him. For the next few years she feigned compliance and contentment with her new "husband.' When coalition forces were advancing in Mosul the ISIS commander asked her to help him escape. She gave him a niqab and led him to an area where coalition forces were letting civilians through. She rushed ahead of her 'husband' and as soon as she got to the coalition checkpoint she turned and pointed at the ISIS commander and revealed to the soldiers who he was, finally getting her revenge on him.
  • As an Iraqi I thank you Griffin for bringing attention to this brutal battle. One of the toughest in 21st century. Im proud that it was our men who will be remembered for this battle.

As a Mosul citizen I would like to thank you for your honest and accurate presentation of this brutal war … also huge thanks for our Iraqi troops that have shown extreme courage and professionalism in this battle 🇮🇶🇮🇶

As a young Iraqi man who lived in Mosul and was 12 years old when ISIS took over the city, I experienced and witnessed all of these tragic events, scenes, and trauma. I'm very surprised by the accurate details you have provided. I want to thank you sincerely for this video; it was so precise that I felt like I was reliving those moments and unlocking memories that had inexplicably faded away from my memory.
  • Deepest respect for the Iraqis soldiers, who remained in their motherland and kept fighting.

4:10 Love how griffin’s cartoon self isn’t messing around and has on typical combat zone/press body armor on
  • @Reallarsa

I don’t think words can do justice how how digestible you make events like this. Despite knowing nothing about the districts of the city or the surrounding villages, the animations and your narrative make it incredibly easy to follow. Thank you!

I was waiting for something like this for so long. Militia vs. Army battles that aren't swept up by the U.S. or Russia are barely covered on history channels I find, it is nice to see this.
  • My uncle was a iraqi special forces soldier he died by in 2017 in mosul
  • @theoddguy985
8:26 that person in the middle that you added is my father I believe major general fadhil barwari ❤ as an iraqi this video is EXTREMELY detailed I love it

I highly recommend the recent war movie "Mosul", directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan. It is an excellent movie set during this battle. It focuses on the Nineveh Province swat team as they try to liberate Mosul as well. One of my favorite war films and I was super excited to see The Armchair Historian covering this battle.
  • @OWTShark
As a Kurd i want to thank u so much for this video, the war against ISIS was a beautiful example of global cooperation to defeat an evil force.

There is a minor error at time stamp 7:18. The man on the left is wearing a green headband that says "kata'ab alqassam" or Qassam Brigades which is the military wing of Hamas. That headband is only worn by them and they only operate in Gaza. Great video nonetheless.
