Deadbolt vs Base Camp: Performance & Value!

The Axial SCX10 II Deadbolt is back with new electronics, updated plastics and new tires. It's also the cheapest 1/10 scale RTR crawler in the Axial stable. Even the SCX10 III Base Camp is $50 more than the Deadbolt.

The Base Camp has some decent running gear and looks better on paper than the Deadbolt, with:
- portal axles
- a better radio transmitter
- arguably better tires
- metal links and shock bodies, and
- licensed bumpers.

But then, the Deadbolt is lightweight and packs the same tough drive train and nearly the same electronics package but for $50 less. Straight axles give it a lower center of gravity, too.

So, which is the better buy? The truth will come out either way on the rocks. Which one crawls better and does the Deadbolt offer worse, equal or better value for money when considering crawling performance? We sure want to find out!

Let's test!

I’ve got both and would recommend the basecamp for anyones first 1/10 scale rig. The small differences make the decision. (Links, radio, portals, etc)

The beauty of this channel is that, even with lower grade equipment, the level of detail into its features, capabilities, and overall dedication to giving it a fair overview of its performance, makes it always a compeling review, even if I have no interest in the product. That's commendable, Craig! Congrats!!
  • Great unbiased review man. Your reviews and tips are very helpful. Thanks for doing them.
  • @scottjlambert
Craig is back! Well these are the kinds of videos you make that I enjoy anyway haha. Really great to see a comparison between these two.
  • @mitsuman5555
I'd go deadbolt just based on looks, but I'm not the target market for either one really. I was enjoying your commentary on this one. It was reminding me of a sports commentator who finds things to talk about in a relaxed way even when not much is happening.

I have an OG Deadbolt and love it. The 10.3 Basecamp looks great and I'm considering it after my current pro comp power wagon build.
  • @jdsrcs8061
Great comparison vid. I do not have a Basecamp, but I do have the green Deadbolt which I like alot. I did add a little bit of weight but not much. The best mod has been swapping in the Fusion Pro. The stock motor work great but my local hobby shop had one in stock so I got it.👍👍👍
  • Great little review of both RTR kits. Very helpful for someone new to the hobby to understand what to look for in kits and what makes a great crawler out of the box. Knowing what spares to expect and what electronics is important too. Keep up the simple content for those without huge rc budgets. Would there be another shell that fits that isnt the 'racer look' more factory cab?
  • Hands down, my favorite Axial rtr is still the Jeep 2000 XJ!!! Because it has the original AX10 three gear transmission! With the plastic Gears. And the icing on the cake, is the 3 piece Axles. I have not bought a new Axial rtr since they have discontinued the XJ!!! Just can't bring myself to buy into less is more...

Getting one of these on a trade today, so here we are lol. I like your multiple "problems" for testing rigs. I do something similar on my home course to base how changes or new rigs stack up. I recall watching one of your videos awhile back. Threw a sub your way. Cheers!
  • @fishnrc294
Nice comparison I always look forward to your input & the test course. You put it through its paces for sure. This just reinforces the simple is good thing. I’ve had RTR’s & did upgrades but in the end did it actually hurt the performance because these simpler crawlers are very good. I have the 1:10 scale Honcho on the SCX 2 platform & stock with plastic links did good. I’ve since replaced the plastic links for metal & upgraded the servo & it just seems to want to go over everything. It’s a super fun truck. It’ll be interesting to see it perform with upgrades. And I can’t see how anybody would prefer the Basecamp body style compared to the Deadbolt. Also any progress with the Marksmen hopefully we get a update. I haven’t had mine out so I’ll definitely get it out I was using it a lot so it’s nice to rest it.
  • Nice video. Good job. Been watching quite a few of your vids lately and I'm enjoying the experience. Well done. John.
  • @TheRokenya
lol someone needs to cut their grass! ;) I like how you are going slow with the problems again Craig...Hearing your thinking and hints / tips on doing the 6 problems / 10 gates is always appreciated. As a vid, I would also be interested in your thinking on setting up your course, as I'm looking at doing my own up here in the Perth hills...
  • That dif is like fingers down a chalk board 😂 Been contemplating the deadbolt, as like the open style bodyshell, but after seeing the chassis in more detail, I think i'll give it a miss. Not saying it doesn't perform etc, but feels like the pocket would get hurt upgrading it Lol. Thanks as always 😍👍
  • @Island_Times
i am a bit premature here as still playing vid, but i thought the Base Camp had portal axles .
  • @FeralRC
A local shop had the Deadbolt on sale for $229 USD. That seems to be a much more realistic price and it was stupid of me to pass it up. Already have a Base Camp and we love it!
  • @gooberpea8134
Can’t wait to see what you do with it. I got the Deadbolt a couple months ago when they were on clearance to make room for these new ones. It was $240 USD. My first 1/10 anything and it’s been great. Waiting to see what you do with yours and I’ll probably follow along.
  • Thanks for the review. You help a great deal on trying to decide what rig to buy!
