Columbia University protests: Crowds demand school cut ties with Israel

Published 2024-04-17
Hundreds of students at Columbia University in New York have gathered to call on the school to cut ties with Israel.
The university's president is appearing before a Congressional committee - to respond to allegations of anti-Semitism on campus.
Since Israel's war on Gaza began in October, there've been regular protests at American universities condemning the war.

Students who support Palestinians say they've been disproportionately targeted and censored by campus officials.

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey spoke with one of them at the Columbia University protest.

Columbia U has been known for strong ( and sometimes , unpopular) political protests that often go against the big money that often backs the university. I was there in the 1980s as a student who got involved with the anti-apartheid protests. My dorm master came to me on my graduation day and informed me of the fact that the FBI came through and asked her questions about me. She was shown photos they had taken at the protest. We had a great laugh because she told them she had never seen me before and didn't know anything. Lol!

  • Open your mouth, judge justly, be the defender of the needy and the poor.
  • Proud of the students ❤. There is not an antisemitic bone in the bodies of those who support Palestinian freedom. We are standing on the right side of history.

Why isn't the US media telling us why they are protesting? They call them pro Hanas protesters, that's repulsive.

So where's the democracy, America? Why should these students be penalized, it's their freedom of speech, isn't it? USA is going around the world promoting democracy, freedom of speech and humanitarian rights but they don't practice what they preach.
