Istanbul’s Spice Bazaar may be a global tourist trap, but isn’t nearly as rage-inducing as the squawking group tours inside the Grand Bazaar. Here, a remnant of authenticity lives on in this 17th century building, created by commission for Sultana Turhan Hatice. Visually-arresting piles of spices and Turkish delight, and rows of pushy men, make for a wild afternoon of souvenir shopping and colorful conversation. Inside the Ucuzcular stall the sellers are friendly and happy to let you browse.
The Grand Bazaar, located between Nuruosmaniye Mosque, Mercan, and Beyazıt, was built in 1461 during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Although its construction started during the reign of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, the Bazaar gained its current glory during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The Grand Bazaar is one of the most significant and complex projects developed by the Ottoman Empire.
The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest shopping centers in the world with 64 streets, 2 covered bazaars (bedesten), 16 inns, 22 gates, approximately 3600 shops. About 20000 people work in the building, which covers an area of 4500 square meters.
Though most travel guides and people who visit Istanbul regularly will tell you that the place to stay is in the heavily tourist infested area of Sultanhamet or in the modern European area of Beyoglu, in my opinion the best part of the city to stay in is Sirkeci.
What makes the area better than staying up the hill in the main part of Sultanahmet is that you are in a transportation hub that makes the entire city easily accessable to you.
Follow your nose! The Spice Bazaar, also called Egyptian Bazaar, is known for its many scents and colors. The oriental spice market is located on Eminönü Square, just to the right of the New Mosque, of which it has remained an important part to this day.
As soon as you walk in, you smell such a strong herbal smell that you almost go back. This is the essence that circulates all kinds of spices from India, Syria, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia paint the hands and faces of the concubines, which gives fragrance and strength to houses, baths, mouths, beards, and dishes, to the irritable pashas who scatter the imagination, drunkenness, and joy in the magnificent city. Spice Bazaar, where it turns into pills, powder, and ointments.

Visiting the markets in Istanbul is always fun. It is a place full of strange and interesting things. The taste of Lokum, which I tasted here, seems to have lingered around my mouth for over a month. 😁
