What a beast! I`m 60 years old, born about 10km in distance to this „secret place“. My Grandpa worked his whole life „beim Daimler“, his first boss was Rudolf Uhlenhaut. He told us all the stories about this great engineer and their dominance in racing. Thanks for this nice video reminding me to my hometown and childhood.

  • I'm 72 and when I was 10 my father let me drive his 300 SL. WOW!!! What a great experience.

As an old time Mercedes collector, I have seen many photos of this car, but this is the first time that I have ever heard what the engine sounds like. Thank you so much for this unique experience. We need more car you tubers to develop an interest in the great cars of the past. The new super cars are all so much alike compared to these exotic beasts.

As a "circumferentially-challenged" individual myself, I find it very gratifying that the healthy and obviously very talented mechanic get to drive this machine. More power to him!

One reason for the end of the program was the accident at Le Mans. Pierre Levegh's 300 SLR hit another car from behind on the pit straight (the other car was avoiding Mike Hawthorne's Jaguar) and was launched into the crowd at about 150 mph. No safety barriers in those days. Levegh and over 80 spectators were killed.

I was passed on the Autobahn A45 by one of those two cars back in the 1960s. I have no way of knowing whether it was Mr. Uhlenhaut behind the wheel, but I have always fantasized that it was and he was on a secret mission of some kind. Just remembering it 50 years later the sound of that exhaust gives me goosebumps today. Incredible machine. I had forgotten that it has 8 cylinders, unlike the W198.

That gear shifter is absolutely gorgeous. It must make a very distinctive clicking sound.

Rudolf Uhlenhaut was the engineer that designed the racing version of that car (convertible) and then the 300SL roadcars. He also designed that specific car, two were built and he took one of them as his daily driver. Mercedes owns both today. Some of most beautiful, elegant, ahead of their time machines ever built. Great video of something not often seen.
  • It’d be interesting to know how the magnesium body was assembled. You can’t weld magnesium for well known reasons. That’s why the Bugatti Atlantic used hundreds of rivets on pinched seams he cleverly incorporated as a design element. The Mercedes has no visible seams and looks like typical bodywork of the period. Be fun to know how they did that?
