"I was born to write this song and he (Johnny Cash) was born to sing it" - Trent Reznor.

This is probably one of the saddest songs written. Originally by NIne Inch Nails where the meaning was more about spiraling out of control with drug addiction. But when Johnny covered it, it became more about the end of life, regrets and truly what is important. People, love is the most important thing. Appreciate the people in your life because, really , that's all you truly have that matters. Both Johnny and his wife passed shortly after this video was made. Again, thank you both for reacting to it.

"hurt" by johnny cash is the reflection of his own life and actually a cover of a nine inch nails that he readapted for himself. he struggled throughout his life with addiction to drugs and alcohol. the picture of the older lady is his mother. the lady standing behind him was his wife june. the song is about looking for forgiveness from those he hurt and realizing that life is not about collecting possessions but relationships and not taking them for granted.... complex visions of his crumbling museum, his childhood home, cracked dusty awards mixed family images and the crucifixion of Christ show a simple man searching for salvation as he is nearing death. the piano does appear to represent a coffin and he supposedly never opened it again after the last take. its one of the most powerful videos ever done and can bring the most ruthless of men to tears. his wife died shortly after the video and he died 8 months later... even the museum burnt down to the ground a few years later during a renovation project.... i try to go back and watch anytime i feel i maybe taking life for granted.

I love how the Piano becomes stronger and stronger as the Song reaches its end

I've been a fan of Johnny Cash since I was nine years old. Meanwhile I'm 60 years old and still love his music.

Johnny Cash was one of the only musicians who could make you really feel his inner pain in such an effortless manner. A truly iconic performer.

Having just entered my 81'st year, this hits me hard and deep. I appreciate the reactions you two post. Thank you.
  • Another artist named Trent Resnor wrote this song as a young man and didn’t really connect with it, so it was put away till many years later. It was brought back to life by producer Ric Reuben, who had heard the original recording. Ric was doing a series of recordings with Johnny when he was in the latter part of his life. Ric found the song, then the perfect artist. Johnny wasn’t sold, but Ric pushed him to work on it some more. This was Jonnies last recording before his death. One of the most powerful recordings ever.
  • "everyone I know goes away in the end"- gets me everytime

Really I see it as a good-bye from Johnny, a good-bye too the world. His wife passed during the making of this and Johnny died not long after her some say with a broken heart as they truly had a love many never find. i am sure many of the lyric's in this song touched us all in some way a sad powerful song. Ty for your reaction RIP JC..Keep Safe Keep Strong
  • This was Johnnys last video and last single and it was a wonderful good bye for the man in black.
  • The lady on the stairs is June Carter Cash, his beloved wife, who was terminally ill and died shortly after the video. Johnny died within months. This was a 9 INCH Nails song. The author saw the video and said it was Johnny's song now. They both fought drug addiction. At the end when Johnny closes and caresses the piano.... pathos and finality.
  • There is a version of Hurt with Adam Chance of Home Free with The Hound and The Fox another amazing singing duo.
  • He passed away not long after he done this video ..God rest his soul

A life filled with regret is a life wasted. Good, bad, or indifferent we are the sum total of our life's experiences. Change one you alter the whole. Life has taught me to cherish my pain in equal measure to my joy. For to truly know one you must know the other. As I get close to my end I look back on my life and see that I would change.....nothing

The whole Album is so amazing. I heard it thousand times and every time it hits me in many ways. Hurt and 13 are my favorite Songs.

Such a sad song. Johnny Cash's daughter told him it sounded like he was getting ready to die when she heard it. Sadly, June Carter Cash died shortly after this was filmed and Johnny joined his wife in the afterlife four months later.
