Tonight i caught the Avanti West Coast train from London Euston to Holyhead, where i caught the Stena Line ferry Stena Adventurer to Dublin. The Journey was just over 7 hours, leaving London at 7:10pm and arriving at Dublin at 5:45am the next morning.

Wow this was so great to watch! I did the same journey several times, over 40 years ago. An old rickety, stinking and crowded train from Heuston station London to Hollyhead. The boat to Dun Laoghaire, after a few hours slippery everywhere from the puke of all the seasick people. And then the crowded train from Dun Laoghaire to Dublin Connolly station. It all looks so new and luxurious now, the train and the boat and the stations! It all has changed so much I feel like I'm a 100 years old right now :(
  • Just a quick note: you can get a later train from euston and change at crewe and chester saves waiting around in holyhead for ages when its cold as doing so arrives at holyhead later.

I took the ferry to Dublin from Holyhead like three weeks ago. The trip to Dublin was rough as balls. But the trip coming back was smooth sailing (pardon the pun)

Very good.. I once spent 18 ๐Ÿ”ž hours in Holyhead ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™ waiting for my ferry after a storm cancelled everything from the port. It was 1988.. and there was Nothing in that place opened.. Jesus christ I thought I was going to freeze and starve to death.. ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚ & then the crossing to Dublin was like hell.. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ ๐Ÿ˜ฐ๐Ÿคข๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿคฎ.. Yep I've had the Holyhead experiences many a time. If you ever do that trip again go on the morning service ๐Ÿš‚ from London to Dublin.. Much more than the night one. โœŒ๏ธ

This is pure luxury in comparison to my experience of the journey in the 1970s and 1980s! In those days I had no option but to travel this way if I wanted to visit London as airfare would have been way beyond my paltry finances. I'm tempted to do it again but maybe later in the year.

Another journey I would like to do sometime. However maybe on the daytime routing and avoiding the overnight. I'm not sure I would as been as brave as you to go walking round Holyhead in the middle of the night. You looked kind of miserable.
  • A lot harder getting through customs and immigration into Australia. First time there the airport trolleys had a 1 dollar or 50 cent coin deposit/fee slot, great for first time visitors who had never seen Aussie money. They pick on solo travellers for drug smuggling checks! A bit much.

laughed alot watching your video - I have been doing this journey for decades - stuff Ryanair - if I can get a reasonable price room in the Holyhead Travelodge I will catch the morning ferry to Dublin otherwise I suffer the overnight journey like you did - McDonalds is very close to Travelodge - you got to Dublin well done
