The violent streets of New York in the 1800s were dangerous after dark. Crime, debauchery, saloons and the chance to get kidnapped (shanghaiing) were ever present - and it didn't take much for drunken arguments to turn into battles and riots, which the police struggled to control. This was the 'Gangs of New York' era city that one journalist decided to report on (after dark) when he accompanied a police detective on a visit to some of the city's worst criminal dens to meet some of its most infamous characters. This is his genuine account of life on the notorious streets of New York.

Gangs of New York was such a great movie, not because any of it was particularly factual, but I think it did a good job of capturing the "feel" of the time and place.

This is how American History books (in high school) should read and be illustrated. The way history is taught it's no wonder kids are bored and turned off. All just dates and watered down facts. Real life is ever so much more interesting! 🧡

The Brits loved coming over here in the 19th century to say "look it's already falling apart" meanwhile London was just awful in so many ways
  • Arthur had the power of his mustache to save him from the hooligans and rabble.
  • Sent ahead of my 9 year old Grandfather's immigration from Ireland, his older sister went on to Buffalo to secure employment to avoid any possibility of being dragged into the squalor of the slums and The Gangs, their reputation of preying on the poorest emigres well known, the extended family over the West sacrificing and saving pennies for years to send 2, they were chosen. He an ambitious middle son and self sufficient, she extremely intelligent and a hard worker.
  • You have the perfect voice for narrating this type of content. Also, your videos are extremely well written and formatted. Great work!
  • I love the idea of an Oxford man going undercover in NYC. I'm amazed he lasted longer than an hour.

"Colored person wanted, No Irish need apply." Job ad in the Brooklyn Eagle, 1865
  • The narration in this is absolute gold đŸȘ™đŸȘ™đŸȘ™đŸ˜đŸ‘đŸ‘đŸ‘đŸ‘đŸșđŸșđŸșđŸ˜ƒđŸ€™

This sounds a lot like downtown San Francisco 2023.

I love the utter contempt and disgust from him 😂 he doesn’t hold back which is great for us.
  • I'm Irish Catholic American, I am also a life long resident of NYC and have lived in the lower east side, Manhattan for ten years now. Most people are uneducated about the treatment of the Irish immigrants, when I hear white privilege and that white people have never been oppressed or faced racism and hatred which couldn't be farther from the truth. Infact the Irish weren't considered to be white or human and were used as disposable labor and cannon fodder for the civil war. The problem with our education system is the lack of history being taught instead they are being forced to learn about sexuality and the teachers political and sexual preferences instead of the history of the country. I get offended when I'm called a ancestors had been slave owners and oppressed blacks and therefore I am guilty of ? But again it's so far from the truth I want to give them a history lesson. The reason why some black people have Irish last names or are light skinned or have Irish facial features is because the Irish and the blacks lived together and naturally mated with each other. Btw the Irish are still being oppressed and there country is still being occupied by the English just like it's been for 1,000 years. So calling us privileged or not to know what oppression or racism or hatred or being enslaved or forced from your home forced to fight forced to work , is ignorant and far from the truth. Why can't we inform these people about the truth.

Manhattan in the 1800s was a crime infested hell hole. Not much has changed then compared to 2020 and on.... sad how NYC is regressing again.
  • What a horror story! New York in the 1800s sounds like the 3rd ring of hell.
  • They sure spoke differently back then. Life must have been hell for those people in those new york slums. Can you imagine leaving your home country with dreams of a better life in this new country of America, and ending up on water street? The story of the guys being drugged and waking up on a ship in the middle of the ocean is wild.
