As a Mexican, I had never noticed that we pronounce consonants very strongly. In Mexico all letters must be pronounced, we don't say "ehtamoh bien" we say "eStamoS bien".

English is just the odd language out here. Obviously Spanish and Portuguese are more closely related Romance languages, while English is a West Germanic language that has been extensively influenced by Old Norse and Medieval French. Historically, vowels in English words, particularly long vowels, underwent a systematic pronunciation changes (the Great Vowel Shift) in which vowels that used to sound like "ee" and "oo" (long i and long u) became pronounced as "eye" (as in "high") and "ow" (as in "how"). Meanwhile, vowels that sounded somewhat like "ay", "eh", and "owe" (long e, long ea, and long o) became pronounced more like "ee" (as in "bee", "beat") and "oo" (as in "too"). Finally, the vowels "ah" and "awe" (long a and long oa) became more like "ay" (as in "bay") and "owe" (as in "boat"). So the vowel pronunciations shifted while English word spellings remained relatively constant. This explains why in modern English, the name "Diane/Diana" is pronounced "die-ANN-uh", with the written "i" pronounced as a centralized diphthong "eye", and the name "Gabriel" is pronounced "GAY-bree-ul", with the written "a" pronounced as a long e (̈"ay") vowel. None of the Romance languages underwent these vowel shifts, and so written "i" remained as a pure high vowel (as in Spanish "día"/Portuguese "dia"), and written "a" remained a pure low vowel "ah" (as in Spanish/Portuguese "casa").

I think for most words with an S in it, the Cuban girl got closer to the Chilean pronunciation than the Chilean. Our "proper" Chilean way to say things is how the Chilean girl pronounced them, however, we usually remove the "S" in words in informal talk, so "Sebastian" -> "Sebahtian", "Jesús" -> "Jesuh", and so on
