Hakeem Olajuwon Defense on Shaq - 1 pt in OT - 1995 Finals Game 1

Published 2015-11-04
Hakeem forced Shaq into turnovers and some missed shots, but through 4 quarters Shaq still got his fair share of points on Hakeem. In OT however, Shaq only had 1 point off a free throw and only attempted one other shot (which he missed on Hakeem).

Part of Shaq's passiveness in OT was because of Hakeem's defense and the other was because Shaq didn't assert himself offensively and demand the ball. Hakeem got the game winner in OT and the Rockets took Game 1

"Hakeem The Dream was the greatest center of all-time." - Shaquille O'Neal
  • I don't think people realize how hard it would be to defend Shaq like this for a series and be your teams go to guy.

you couldn't punk The Dream. that man is from Africa lol

That Nick Anderson choke job at the line was legendary

To anyone that says Shaq is better than Hakeem... Shaq is on record twice saying Hakeem is the greatest centre. Do you know Shaq better than he knows himself?

No question Hakeem was the best back then.
  • shaq is lucky to be 7'1 and ~300 lbs, while hakeem has the dream shake (great footwork), jump shot, better dribbling... and also quality passer. The 35 pts in '95 wcf, 33 in finals
  • I’m a Knicks fan but Hakeem schooled a young Shaq, his defense was the best you can get at that time vs a very dominant Shaq. Love both legends
  • I swear Jordan has the best footwork, but after watching this? Cmon Hakeem has best's of best footwork , imagine a 7' ftr with this versatily. Legendary!

Shaquille O'Neal was 7'1(3 inches taller)-330lbs(70 lbs heavier),11 years younger and a step faster( baseline to baseline) and 150lbs stronger and Olajuwon was still better. Imagine if the measurements were equal.

what happens when you have no basketball skills and you can't use your size, you get swept. then when the great centers get old or retire, you start dominating the no center league. Hakeem had the skills, shaq was just big

Honestly, Shaq did not miss a lot of shots in the series, he shot around 60% and scored close to 27 ppg. It needed a lot of team effort and double team to keep Shaq from scoring more and Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott choking to win the series so easy.

Even though hakeem did a good job defending shaq this season. I know hakeem was hurting after this series

Hakeem could shut down Shaq anytime he wanted its just that he had to average lot of points on offensive end for his team to win but he still shut Shaq down in key moments. Hakeem was a goddamn machine in these playoffs.

i like a more polished 2001 shaq's chances better then a younger version who hadnt mastered the drop step elbow to the sternum hook yet.
