I had the opportunity to test out the new Nikon 400mm f/4.5 telephotolense on wildlife photography. I took it out to photograph the red deer and roe deers. This lense is incredible light and easy to hand hold.
But I was not to lucky with the wildlife. The wind direction was challenging, and the deers did not come close enought for the 400mm and Nikon Z9.

  • Even your "unsuccessful" photo trips are a great learning experience for us viewers! Thank you for all your beautiful and useful videos.
  • It’s a good attitude to have Trond, when wildlife photography is so unpredictable. Take the good with the bad, and just enjoy being out in nature and the fresh air 👍🏻
  • I have this lens paired with the 800mm f/6.3. I use 400 and 800 with the 1.4x they both are sharp. I traded my 600 f/4 off. I was concerned I would miss the f/4 but I don’t really. Keep up the good work.

Hi Trond! Nice video again. I have the 100-400Z and the 1.4Z and I couldn’t be much happier with it. Reluctant at first as the 400 was not available yet but after a couple weeks of shooting I am now very pleased with it! Very sharp ! Thanks again for your work!

great video Trond, its the way the cookie crumbles, better luck next time, it's good to see that it's not all plain sailing and you keep your positive attitude, too many people give up too soon.

Wow! Roe is incredibly shy in Norway it seems. Close to my hometown is a place, where they are pretty easy to photograph... if you can live with civilization (like vineyards) in the background. Great video. Hope to see more of you and the 400.

Thank you. All the best. 👍📷😎
  • Nice video Trond, I’ve had my 400mm 4.5 for about 3weeks, I was apprehensive at first, as my go to focal length is 600mm. Needless to say I’m in love with this lens. I’ve been using it for the red deer rut in the U.K., it’s light, tack sharp. Handheld video it totally doable. Blow away, it works great with the 1.4 tele, not tried the 2x yet. Nikon are smashing it with their lenses
  • Some days I get good pictures and a good adventure; some days I just have a fine outing. It's all good. NY Yankee's Judge set a new record of 62 regular season home runs, but he didn't hit a home run in every game. A large percentage of the time he struck out. But he was always in the game and he always had fun. I suspect you and I are the same way with our photography, Trond. It's all fun and worth the experience whether or not we get a good shot. :)

Hi Trond nice video just to let you know that when I get a new gillie suit I bury it for a couple of weeks and then leave it out to air so it gets wet it will smell like the woods and mask most of your human scent. You should find it will help

Another great video! How do you think the Z9 is compared to Z6ii ? I know it's two very different cameras, but is it worth the upgrade? Even for a hobby photographer?
  • Nice video as usual Trond, thanks. Question,400 with a 2x teleconverter or 800 6.3. I have the 800 on order but as usual the wait from Nikon is torture, for both of these lenses. My 100/400 is awesome but I prefer primes.
  • @CamillaI
More a Safari lens I would suggest ! Quality assured being Nikon though awesome ! Great to walk around with all day 👍

Wonderful video, just proves something like the 180-600 is much more useful. Though I love the idea of a 4.5

  • Dang Trond, nice but expensive small lens. Well I guess not that much more expensive than the others. Are you going to try the 800m 6.3 Nikon. I have my eye on that lens and nikon z mount. Basically that might make me switch to nikon as the Canon / sigma 800mm 5.6 is 14lbs........
