I spent a day with school shooting survivors from Columbine, Stoneman Douglas, and Reynolds High Schools to learn what it’s like to experience a devastating attack on an educational facility.

imagine hiding behind your friend thinking its not real than he gets shot instead of you, then you have to hide behind his death body to survive. I cant even imagine how traumatizing it is.
  • As much as people don’t like online schooling, a pro is that school shootings are near impossible.

A person who survived Columbine had spoken at my school. His sister was the first one to die. Her name was Rachel, and she was known to be one of the most positive human beings in the school. Before the day unfolded, he got into a fight with Rachel, and he wishes that he would’ve taken the blame during the argument. There are some other wild, crazy stuff that he said, but I feel like I’m boring you to the person reading this :,)

the fact that everyone thought it was a senior prank says something...
  • @natty.777
Alayah saying “they needed to take human remnants out of my hair” and then Anthony’s face afterwards...you can tell this really really hurt him

Not-so-fun fact: My best friend/Roommate’s girlfriend is a survivor of the Parkland shooting. I’d say her and I are pretty decent friends as well. She has massive PTSD from it. She said the bodies prevented folks from leaving through the conventional exit and the shooter used the fire alarm to draw students out. I was at the movies with some friends including her when someone pulled the fire alarm and we had to step out, she had a whole breakdown from it. My best friend had to console her for a while before she calmed down. Sad that even survivors have to battle the demons they never asked for

I live in Scotland and I cannot imagine how horrible and dangerous it must be to not even feel safe at SCHOOL, a place which is meant to be safe and secure and is a place for learning and education. The thought of having to hide under bodies or hearing gunshots is an absolute horror

To think that aliyah probably wouldn’t have survived if she hadn’t been behind her friend is so scary. That one small decision completely changed her life.
  • unfortunately, i know exactly how aaleya’s parents felt on that call. the same thing happened with my wife. i was at work and my wife called me which she doesn’t do unless she needs to so i answered it. Her voice was shaking and she told me she was in lockdown because there was a shooter at her work. she works at a boys and girls club. She was saying that she was didn’t have much time to talk or worry she had to save her kids. i told her i loved her and to keep them away from the doors and windows and then i heard a bang and the call dropped. I work in a rehabilitation center for brain injured individuals. i sprinted out of my work and up the stairs hysterical i was shaking and everything was running through my head. i told my coworkers to call my boss because i needed to go NOW. I got in my car and raced to her work and there were seven or so cop cars and cops with ar-15s. luckily they found the kid before anyone was hurt and my wife said the bang was a cabinet falling when they were moving it to block the door. and she doesnt know how to call failed. i will never forget that feeling and fear and how i felt like my world had just completely ended.
  • @IsVyguy
Student here! We just had a school shooting with 11 injured and 2 dead. Heart breaking and terrible... most traumatic experience by far in school.
  • @iambigmanbeats
I was wondering why Aliyah was the only one who said she was a “survivor” but then I heard her story and was like... oh, dang.
  • That must be traumatizing having to hide under a person you see everyday that is deceased to survive...
  • @5tarr_zer0
during a drill my 9th grade teacher told us all the flaws in the way our classroom was built as to where the shooter could enter and told us to know if we were to die to go down fighting. losing your life to injure the attacker could save the lives of others. she told us to use our bags as sheilds and was as straight forward and realistic as possible. kinda like trying to get us to understand how serious it was. edit: i really appreciated how she talked to us bc a lot of teachers pretend it will never happen and others downplay the seriousness.

Aalayah is so damn smart it isn’t even funny. She genuinely needs to be a senator or even the damn president. She’s brilliant, she knows what she’s talking about when it’s comes to legislating and delegating resources, and she’s extremely well-spoken. You don’t see many youth with all of those abilities in spades. Not using that to go into politics would be a damn shame.
  • @m3m3-a-tron95
the fact that she had to witness someone in front of her die is just horrible
  • i can't even imagine seeing your classmates, people you see almost everyday, just die in front of you.
  • I hate how unserious my teachers treated the drill. One of them said that if the kid kept laughing she’s sending him to die first. Pretty shocking.
