Parliamentary elections on July 4th look bleak for Britain’s ruling Conservative Party. The Tories will almost certainly lose power for the first time in 14 years. And lose big. Polls show they could see the largest swing between the main parties in modern history. Rishi Sunak could possibly become the first sitting prime minister to lose their own seat in a general election.

So what have Conservatives done wrong? What has Labour done right? And as 2024 repeats 2016 with another pair of pivotal U.K. and U.S. votes, what can Americans look to learn from Britain?

  • Steve Bray deserves a knighthood for constantly calling these crooks out
  • It's hard to a US audience to realise that the UK is pretty poor, has large wealth inequality and inequality in opportunity. The fact that some people are going to food banks to help serve their needs has become more visible. There is a feeling nothing really works any more, from trains to basic water treatment. Privatisations haven't worked out. The NHS has be underinvested in for years and has fallen behind. The country never really recovered from the 2008 credit crisis. With Brexit, growth is poor. Covid saw a massive amount of money end up in the hands of the rich who put it into assets. It's a big mess. If Labour can't handle the scale of the problems, then the way will be left open for ex bond trader 'man of the people' Farage.
  • Bravo to Helen Lewis for summarising eight years of British politics from multiple angles in a few short minutes. I would have struggled!

A good, informative listen - with just the facts. Pity that most here in the UK won't hear it.
  • Pity bc conservatives are needed in England. The English people don’t know that?

I've been following the election jabber over here since it started, and this is a great 'broad strokes' summary of what's going on - from a safe distance, so to speak.
  • Well as a Brit listening to that even I am depressed the likes of Farage are still rated. Plus the import from the US if gender wars is pretty disgusting 🤮

I asked AI to show me a picture of a douchebag in human form and it showed a picture of Rishi Sunak.

Just look whose leading them. Bring back the smart people.

Oh, please. There are no British conservatives. That's the problem with the Tories. The Tory motto is: "Like Labour, only slower".

Sad how low The Atlantic has sunk since my yputh.
