CITIZEN'S INCOME: "Incentive to work has drastically decreased" Union calls for new type of basic security!

Julia Klöckner, economic policy spokeswoman for the Union faction, spoke in an interview with WELT about the demand for tightening of the citizen's allowance. These demands come not only from the CDU, but also from the FDP. Klöckner criticizes the fact that the FDP originally helped to soften the Hartz IV rules to such an extent that the number of people receiving citizen's allowance rose sharply. The incentive to take up work was drastically reduced as a result.

Klöckner stressed that there are people who can work but don't want to. They shouldn't be supported at the expense of taxpayers. Those who can't work will get help from the welfare state, but those who consciously decide against working shouldn't expect solidarity.

According to Klöckner, the citizen's allowance does not bring more people into work, as planned by the traffic light coalition. Instead, she sees the citizen's allowance as a failure. The Union is calling for the abolition of the citizen's allowance and is calling for a new type of basic security that includes obligations to cooperate and sanctions. Those who can work should also have to work, otherwise others should not co-finance for them.

The discussion about the citizen's income shows fundamental differences in the parties' social policies. While the FDP and CDU are calling for stricter rules and a return to previous standards, the traffic light coalition sees the citizen's income as necessary support. The question remains as to what a fair and functioning basic security system in Germany could look like.
