Cowgirl In The Sand by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Young wrote this song in 1969 while he had the flu and a high fever. That might explain why there are so many different interpretations of exactly what the lyrics mean. Is Young the cowgirl having come from Canada to Southern California where the weather was warm and life was literally a Beach? Is it about a woman or even three different women?
