Here’s another song I wrote and performed, this time about the Second Swedish Crusade in Early Old Swedish (klassisk fornsvenska) during the middle of the 13th century. The song is based loosely on the Erikskrönikan (Eric Chronicle) which details some of the events during the Northern Crusades. According to the Chronicle, King Erik XI sent his men into battle against the Tavastians, a sub-group of the Fins, who were pagan at the time. The Crusade was an extension of the ongoing strife which saw Finland become part of the growing Swedish state.

The song is in a slightly different style; it’s actually an adaptation of a metal song I wrote with my brother quite some time ago.

The cool art is by Mats Minnhagen, check him out: www.minnhagen.com.

Lyrics:
Swænskt blōþ spillis alltof længi.
Heþnir stø̄flar skæmma wār ængi.
Þēr heþnu kænna ej Guþ.

Pavin til orostu kræwir oss
Wæstan havum wīr mæþ oss kors,
Erīker konungher lēþir.

Oss blæsti bø̄r, wīr sighldum þæþan.
Þēr heþnu ræddu sik ok mæþan.
Þēr witu at skaþi komber!

Rīþa fram swænskir korsfarar!
Wīr farum pilagrimbsfærþ wāra!
Al knǣ bø̄ghias ok tungur hylla
Krist, ær rēnsar alt hit īlla!

Ø̄ster korsit bærum wīr hø̄ght
Striþit havir trū wāra ø̄kt.
Til dø̄þa haldum wīr ēþ þæn:
at skīra alla heþna mæn.

Wīr tōkum baner, gengum ā land.
Oss kristnu gik þær wæl i hand.
Wāra skioldi lǣtum skina.

Uppā þā heþna Tavesta
wīr wildum swærþ wár fresta.
Orosta skarp tōk þā til.

Wīr þēr kristnu mæn unnum!
Þēr Tavesta undan runnu!
Dȳrþ sē Guþi æwærþelika!

Rīþa fram swænskir korsfarar!
Wīr farum pilagrimbsfærþ wāra!
Al knǣ bø̄ghias ok tungur hylla
Krist, ær rēnsar alt hit īlla!

Ø̄ster korsit bærum wīr hø̄ght
Striþit havir trū wāra ø̄kt.
Til dø̄þa haldum wīr ēþ þæn:
at skīra alla heþna mæn.

Hwar þēm wildi til handa gā
ok kristin wærþa ok dōp fā,
honom lǣtu þēr gotz ok līf
ok friþ at liva ūtan kīf.

Rīþa fram swænskir korsfarar!
Wīr farum pilagrimbsfærþ wāra!
Al knǣ bø̄ghias ok tungur hylla
Krist, ær rēnsar alt hit īlla!

As an Icelander I can understand like 80-90% of that, funny how incredibly similar it is to even modern Icelandic.
  • I don't think it's possible for Skaldic to put out a song that isn't an absolute banger Going right into the playlist!
  • Cant forget about our Nordic brothers in Christ This, conveniently enough, has the aesthetic of a musical tale then a simple song, its composed and sung appropriately so. Excellent work as usual good sir
  • There are some days I want to be a viking berserker, other days, I want to be a crusader. Skaldic just goes "why not both?"

The ferocity of Vikings tempered by the Holy spirit is a force to reckon with

As a finnish christian, I approve this song

It's kind of cool to see how much I understand of old swedish. When spoken it's hopeless but when reading it, you can actually comprehend quite a bit.
  • A lot of people I know that don’t know history tend to forget that the Viking age didn’t last for the entire medieval era. Most all of Europe was following some form of Christianity by the 14th century, the very last remnants of paganism in Europe were the Lithuanians, but they converted as well. So cool to see people from so far up north in the snow to be influenced by a religion that started so far down south in a desert.
