We came down to South Africa for the Cape Argus Tour. It is the biggest cycling event in the world, probably.
On Friday, to stretch out the legs we went on pre-race ride [~130km why not?] to the Cape of Good Hope [I love this name!]. The road by the ocean side was quiet and a lille deserted.

Suddenly, I spotted a white ostrich on my left, then this beast jumped on the road from the right and started chasing my friends! It was a little scary at first, but then I thought I gonna fell of my bike from laughter. The ostrich didn't have any problem to keep up at 50km/h and apparently they do 70km/h with no sweat.

Luckily the creature decided to leave us alone, as we were running out of road. The Cape of Good hope is a dead end way.

My guess he wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend, i bet she was very impressed!

Imagine being the people at the side of the road at the end and just seeing an ostrich chasing two bikers being followed by a cameraman

Ostrich: "Hey man, I just wanted to let you know that there´s a guy following you with a camera!"
  • @Inktomei
Another proof that the cameraman never dies. That Ostrich straight up skipped him and went after the cyclists.

Ostrich: Hey you dropped your wallet back there.

"Why are you running?" "WHY ARE YOU RUNNING?"
  • I love the three people on the side of the road, watching three bicycles and an ostrich fly by. It's like "welcome to Africa".
  • Ostrich: excuse me, we’ve been trying to reach you about your expiring bike warranty.

He's not chasing, it's just he's never found an adequate jogging partner until now.

This actually reminds me of being chased by a herd of buffaloes during my college days. All the four people including me ran like olympic sprinters that day to escape from being trampled by the herd 😂

Ostrich: "Can we train together guys? I have a race sunday too!"
  • Imagine being the people who had parked their car at the side of the road to enjoy the scenery and all of the sudden three people on bicycles and an ostrich goes by.

Giant ostriches are extremely fast. They can run continuously at speeds greater than 30-35 mph. Top speed exceeds 40 mph. He wasn't chasing, he was joining in. If he wanted to catch those cyclists, he easily could have.

Ostrich’s side of the story: Today I found a wide, long, flat and smooth surface to practice sprinting, but saw some strange four legged animals on some weird things going as fast as I was. These are so interesting creatures, I wonder what they’re up to…

The entire time the camera man was laughing, I was thinking: "Just wait till that bird turns around"

Really puts into perspective how fast an ostrich can run! Wow.
