HOW TO CATCH MACKEREL ON LIGHT GEAR - PLUS FEATHERS | SHORE FISHING FOR MACKEREL

After hearing reports of Mackerel being caught from the shore, I went to a local rock mark to see if I could catch some of these fantastic fish. I'd start by throwing out some feathers, as this would give me the best chance of locating some fish whilst also gauging the depth at which they're at. Once I'd caught half a dozen, I switched to the light gear to have some fun.
My lure choice was a small metal, the 30g Sidewinder Mimic Speed Jig.
This video explains a few things you can do if you're new to fishing and wanting to target mackerel over the summer months.
I hope this video provides a some helpful tips and tactics. Thanks for watching and I'll see you on the next one 🎣

Hi everyone, I've had nothing but trouble uploading videos over the last few days and I really don't know why. I don't think this video has uploaded in the usual high quality resolution. I will try to fix this as soon as I can! Thanks

Oh, the fun we had!!! Late 70s, early 80s, (why am I so old, how did that even happen!?) my dad bought a five-man dinghy with an outboard. For two weeks in summer, off the beautiful North Devon coast, we'd drop a string of feathers down to the sea bed, 200 or so yards off the rocks, reel up a couple of foot and pump that rod. Within minutes, the rod was bent over and a string of gorgeous blue tiger striped mackerel would come up. Occasionally the odd pollack or garfish too. We couldn't stay out for longer than an hour or two max, 'cus the boat would be full of fish! Oh, how I loved those fresh mackerel barbecued! We'd walk around the camp site, Big Meadow, near Coombe Martin, and sell the fish 10p a pop to the other campers. 🤍

Once the mackerel fishing was a given. Never considered NOT catching them in the Summer. Now the numbers are pathetic compared to 30 - 40 years ago. Not seen a decent catch on Brighton Marina this year yet. The best month was June when they would appear in their thousands! Using 6 feathers was asking for trouble you got 6 every time. I used to float fish. The float never cocked - just went straight down! The foreign factory ships destroyed the stock and it takes DECADES to recover 😬😬😬 Great video Call! But make sure you emphasise retuning those you don't need. They could become an endangered species!
  • Great on light gear. I fish a Dexter wedge with 2 sabiks in front of it. Often when one hits just hold and wait for the rest to hit the other two. Top video, love your tips and guidance.

  • Loved it Cal. I love those little lures. Bought a few from MICKS, they also have the slightly bigger one. Very versatile lure, jigging from kayak, boat and from rocks. I have had a few pollock as well!!

Great video! Caught my first mackerel on a Shakespeare Agility HRF last summer in Hastings. Great fun!
  • Metal cherry broken ! the seekers and small line threw 3D metals from savage gear are awesome when you get them moving you can fish any depth and the pulsing you get threw the rod is so satisfying 🥰🥰
  • @CMcGuckin
I normally dont target them, only the pollock. Tried a low water mark today. First mackrell on a soft plastic and then one on a 24g metal jig like yours and then another 2-3 on feathers. I was testing the water as you did but didnt have the same span of water due to rocks and weed. At least i know they are there if the pollock dont show up.
