Incredible discovery that might change our understanding of the deep sea!
The discovery of dark oxygen production on the abyssal seafloor challenges assumptions we had about how ecosystems thrive down there, and has implications on the possible impact of activities like deep sea mining.
Learn how oxygen is generated without sunlight and what this means for our understanding of deep-sea ecosystems. This video uncovers the science behind this phenomenon.

What did you think about this discovery?
  • The writers are really running out of ideas, making dark versions of pre-established characters like this
  • @eaglelord145
For all the objectively great work and research that benefits the planet as a whole, I appreciate that scientists seem to enjoy naming their discoveries something super dramatic and evil-sounding. I mean if I had the opportunity to coin the term “Dark Oxygen”, I absolutely would
  • @ForestRaptor
This is an instance that proves we don't observe hings enough before acting and the mining corpo operations aiming to suck these up need to be shut down yesterday
  • @terrorzacktyl
No deep sea mining. Do not disturb!!! Also, is that subnautica music in the background?
  • @wildworld6264
Such a cool discovery. Thanks for covering this and explaining it so well!
  • @theconsul4757
Hopefully this will have the same effect as archaeological finds have on highway construction - so basically stop any digging in the area from happening
  • @j4v4x
I hope we can protect these deposits pending further study before they are all gone to mining. 😢 I'm reminded of the time Ross Perot sent bulldozers to a protected bird sanctuary at midnight so he could demolish it before the restraining order took effect at 6am... Also, "not because they joined the Sith", rofl! Thank you for that, Maria!!
  • @UFOinDisguise
Science just becomes cooler and cooler the deeper we go.
  • @Simplechioces
This is soooo COOL! I need to know more! lol Cheers, thank you
  • @NyMyers64
Interesting stuff, Maria. Hope you have a great weekend.
  • @towhee3400
Even more reasons why we should focus more on ocean exploration!! So many cool things we've yet to discover
  • @Morganscat
Love your videos, always so interesting and kindly explained, please keep sharing what you love!!
  • So, they found Brain Corals on earth then. Perhaps brought back from planet 4546B (Subnautica).

I pray that science can talk louder than money this time. Top capitalists need to stop being allowed to roll the dice with the environment.

Bite sized information this is why love your channel.
  • @Perktube1
Thankyou for explaining it this way. I understand it now.
  • @Cris-cl3dr
I can't wait to see what else we can learn from this!
