This video documents my journey learning Portuguese in 7 days by breaking down what is ordinarily and overwhelming task (learning a new language) and focus my time and energy on the most important parts. My goal here is become conversational as quickly as possible and demonstrate that you're capable of more than you think if you're strategic & disciplined about how your approach things.

Welcome to the brazillian side of the internet, there’s no turning back...

Brasileiro é um povo simples: se ele vê no título de um vídeo as palavras Brasil, português e brasileiro, ele clica.
  • For anyone learning a new language and getting frustrated by what you see as a lack of progress: I was in Paris before the pandemic shut everything down. Hung out with a French friend, went to a party where I listened to her have a conversation in French with two other people. I didn’t catch everything they said but I understood enough to know they were talking business and she was giving them advice. They kept turning to me to apologize about not including me but I was more than happy listening in and realizing I understood more than I thought I would. Understanding is the first step! Keep going in whatever endeavor you’re taking on.

I'm Brazilian and I've been learning English for 7 months and I can understand perfectly what he speaks and you can learn Portuguese too because it requires dedication and exposure of this language, if you persist you can achieve this

I've always thought the most important part in learning a language (or anything really) is actually taking the first step. It doesn't have to be boring or technical, once you have a small basis it gets a lot more fun, cause language is always cultural and once you get to that, there is no stopping the learning process. Loved this video!

I am just in so much awe of your cinematography skills, the beauty & depth in your footage editing, your eloquence & ability to communicate every thought with so much clarity & efficiency, and the fact that you can capture so much wisdom & value within 1 video. I kept rewinding just to soak in all of the stunning footage you've captured of the world (sooo many jaw drop moments over here). Thank you thank you (I'm so honored to have found your channel!).

Hi Nathaniel, I am struggling to learn Portuguese being a native Spanish speaker. As you said, it's a lot of unlearning, you would guess that it would be easier because these languages have similar words but it is not. And I wanted to find inspiration to keep going. So thank you for making this video, it's good to see that others struggle too. And if it was easy everyone would do it <3
  • Que experiência linda. Parabéns pelo seu aprendizado, eu professora de inglês, e também estou tentando aprender italiano, francês e ter a proficiência em inglês. Seu exemplo compartilhado com todos é uma inspiração. Gratidão!

Learning a new language is like discovering a whole new planet with own culture, traditions, quarks and small nuances. It consumes you entirely, feeling totally reborn.

Nathaniel sometime soon: "I decoded alien signals from space in 7 days - Part 1"
  • Hey Nathaniel. I have just watched part 1 of your endeavour to learn Portuguese and, as an ESL teacher and Brazilian Portuguese native, I have to say that it made my day to hear what you have to say for different reasons. Firstly, I see that your main message here is how to learn a foreign language, and I have to say that the way you do it is quite interesting. For me, it seems like it can be a very efficient way to learn a language, although I also have to say that it seems like you put a lot of effort into it, which is great, but not something that everyone language learner is willing to do. Adults students, in particular, are usually quite busy with their lives, so from experience, I would not expect that many people trying something like that. I was wondering if you could add to your suggestions something like breaking down your study periods into 25 minutes blocks (Pomodoro technique) and have breaks in between. Apart from that, all your ideas seem great! What I would like to stress, however, is how positive your message is, in my opinion. After working with language acquisition for so many years, it is my impression that our mindset plays a pivotal role in terms of how effectively we can learn a language. Your video provides an interesting view on how to encourage people to define their motivations to learn a language, and at the same time offer a realistic, data-based method for learning a language that seems to really work. Thank you so much for making this video. I hope you do not mind sharing them with my students :) .
