Does LASIK eye surgery wear off with time? In this video I explain how this can happen.

Lasik stands for Laser Assisted In situ Keratomileusis. This is where a flap is created in the anterior cornea using a Femto second laser. This flap is folded back and a excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea to compensate for glasses and contact lenses.

Can Lasik eye surgery wear off? Yes, we usually call this regression and these 1-2% of cases do often get lasik enhancements. But over time the eyeball does age and the crystalline lens inside the eye changes. With this change the power of the eye changes and people often need glasses again or require another type of eye surgery.

  • I had lasik in 2016 and now squinting doesn’t help my vision at all. I need a touch up or glasses unfortunately. The 6 years of perfect vision were amazing though!

I got PRK in the army in 2011. I still have 20/15 in both eyes. Been a great 12 years.
  • @jeweldenile8995
Gotta say I had it done in 2004. Scared but it was the best decision for me. I just hated bifocals of all kinds. 2023 and my vision hasn’t changed. I feel very fortunate.
  • I got Lasik 17 yrs ago and it has worked wonderfully for me no issues with it. However I've been diagnosed with diabetes and that has been messing with my eyes now. But the lasik worked for me
  • @infamousicee6009
Yea, I'll stick to glasses. I was always cautious about this surgery.

I waited until 25. Now at 48, still see great and can still read medicine bottles, but coin dates are hard sometimes and use low prescription glasses for night driving. It is still better than waking up blind searching for my glasses!

My eye doctor recommended not receiving Lasik until after the age of 25 or graduate school. They stated that after lasik some patients' vision changed as a result of the extensive reading requirements (extented and repeated periods of reading close up) of higher education such as law school.

Almost 30 yrs! By far best thing i ever spent money on

I had LASIK 23 years ago. Still 2020 vision.
  • @StefanMalic
I've had it done about two years ago. I do feel like my vision is slooowly regressing, but honestly? No regrets whatsoever! Just the fact I could see normally again without glasses or contacts, it's amazing! I am very grateful for being able to afford it.
  • @curturweider9473
My dad retired as an ophthalmologist 32 years ago right when the surgery was starting he told me to not get it. A few years later I asked again he said do not get it
  • I had Lasik at 19. I'm 22 now and my eyes are failing me yet again..... Pretty pissed off honestly, it was like 3000$
  • @kuntrasha
Oh goody. Got me glasses ahead of schedule. Can't wait for the cataracts mate. Cheers
  • @joea.9969
I am not considered a good candidate so i mostly wear glasses but Im considering trying contacts. My son loves his contacts.
  • @TC-8789
I have extremely myopic eyes (currently around -14) and have been, unprompted, strongly warned against getting lasik by multiple eye professionals.
  • @loren9194
love you doc! thanks for the juicy info about lasik. missed you seeing in my yt shorts 😍 ps. love the eyes always
  • @vchafab
Got Lasik 17 years ago at 18 and paid $6k for it. I finally just got glasses last week as I can no longer read freeway and street signs anymore. I wish it lasted longer as I was never told it would wear off. I also found out that I shouldn’t have gotten it since I have family history of high eye pressure. Wish I could go back in time.
  • @Be4zle
Correct me if i’m wrong but doesn’t the surgery actually never wear off and permanently corrects the vision? It’s just that lasik doesn’t resolve deterioration due to aging and other eye related issues.
