The protection configuration also requires an adequate knowledge of the theory of operation of the machine being protected. If one of these motors fails due to overload or experience a short circuit then it can completely shut down these processes. These incidents are very costly for the owner-operator and can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue due to the down time.
Applying the proper motor protection elements to help monitor the running conditions can help with taking the motor offline when a fault or abnormal operating condition exists.
