The Spectacular Italian Baroque Garden of Isola Bella

Published 2021-08-26
On Isola Bella – which translates as “beautiful island” – in Lago Maggiore in Italy, is a spectacular Italian Baroque garden, built over the course of 40 years, between 1631 and 1671.

The centrepiece of the garden is the Teatro Massimo, with ten terraces that explode in a riot of different coloured flowers and blooms. Statues, obelisks and fountains integrate perfectly with the flora of these ten spectacular terraces, at the top of which stands the statue of a unicorn – the heraldic symbol of the aristocratic Borromeo family, who have owned the island for more than half a millennium.
