In which I spend 50 minutes analyzing how and why The Rising of The Shield Hero is a pretty okay Isekai anime. Mostly.

"Owning people is wrong" "Well that's just like, your opinion, man."

I am so glad I am not the only one who thinks the "isekai protag gets slaves but it's okay he's a good guy" trope is utterly insane.
  • "No romantic interest in his slave daughters" It is baffling that this is one of this show's better points
  • @Cthulhululu
The trope of "no i choose to remain enslaved to this person because i like it that way" hurts my soul every time
  • @KigaiOkasu
ā€œFilo is the best part of every action scene!ā€ Translation: ā€œI love every moment where Motoyasu gets kicked in the crotch!ā€

My problem with shield hero is that EVERYONE outside Naofumi's circle will behave like either someone with brain damage or cartoonishly evil.

It is sad that series can't just let kids be adopted children, and seemingly have to dance around them being romantic partners.
  • Shield hero: owns slaves Skeleton Knight: frees slaves, allows them to beat the absolute shit out of their former owner
  • @Ghost77731
"How absurdly proud Naufumi seems to be of himself for coming up with the same prank we all pulled on our pokemon rivals at age 6" Had me fuckin dying bro
  • @gruenenator
"Jeff, they're not chocobos, they're filolials." "I know. So anyway, about the chocobos...." Lmao, absolutely perfect.
  • @ivyward1393
honestly the amount of sex slavery in isekai anime really reminds me of comfort women in ww2
  • @BjornTorbs
props to Naofumi's English VA. bro is just the epitome of a shifty, edgy, batman-OC that he manages to nail Naofumi perfectly with that one slavery defense line

The shield hero could have been sooo much better, but honestly I enjoyed the begining of the first season. The thing I hate the most is the fact that the other heros are so generic and boring

As someone already said "To make the Shield Hero look good, the author made all the other characters dumb"
  • @connerrose6116
The fact that he buys a slave doesnā€™t really bother me since he's supposed to be at his lowest point and it could have been a set up for character growth later on. The fact that they keep using the slave crest is what's weird and uncomfortable. There's no justifiable reason for it, especially since the previous shield hero is a hero to oppressed people
  • My favorite genre of isekai anime is ā€œslavery is bad so I shall become powerful to stop injustice! ā€¦by buying several slaves and using them to move up in the social hierarchy so that I can associate with the rich elites and then I will definitely end all the social issues and not just mess around with my good friends who I definitely donā€™t sleep withā€

It's weird to me that the fake rape accusation is considered the elephant in the room, when I've never heard of that plot point and would have assumed the slavery was the elephant in the room. And even then, I hadn't heard about how he abused the agony-inducing slave tattoos. Why does this room have so many elephants?
  • @FlubbedPig
Very minor complaint, but it's always bugged the absolute hell out of me that despite being the "Shield Hero", Naofumi's most frequent role in combat is not as a tank. More often then not, his huge variety of magical shields makes him essentially the party's caster.
  • @MoikaSwirl_
I hate how fanfic writers are better at humanising the characters and making this story more realistic
  • @iButt
Raphtalia choosing to become a slave again makes it less fucked up in-universe, but significantly more fucked up irl. These are characters, not people, and all their decisions and personality traits are decided on by the author. Who decided that the main love interest, who is also mentally 10 years old and the main source of fan-service, SHOULD be a slave to the main character. The titty tattoo doesn't even come up again as a relevant point for Raphtalia specifically, so there's no plot relevance to fall back on here. The author clearly just has a power dynamic fetish, which isn't the worst thing ever, especially by Isekai mangaka standards, but it's just very... ew.
