Community Resiliency In Action

Published 2024-07-18
Cardano was built with security and resilience in mind. Through academic research, formal methods, and robust system design, Cardano adheres to the highest standards. Written in Haskell, a secure functional programming language, and powered by the Ouroboros proof-of-stake protocol, Cardano offers rigorous security guarantees backed by peer-reviewed research.

Yet, no network is immune to attacks. In this video, team members and guests from Intersect, Input | Output, and the Cardano community come together to discuss the recent DDoS attack on the Cardano network.

Join us as we explore the event’s impact on the network, key Dapps, and projects, and how the community rallied together to defend the ecosystem.

Jack Briggs, Matt Capps, Kevin Hammond, Pi Lanningham, and Samuel Leathers discuss the proactive measures taken by developers and institutions, the resilience of the network’s architecture, and the pivotal role of community support during the incident.

TL;DR: Despite a spam attack causing temporary chain load spikes, transactions continued processing. Block production initially dropped by 20%, recovering to 10% below normal levels within hours. A new node version including enhanced security was promptly released.

Thanks to the community and all involved for their swift action and support during the incident.

  • It's great to see the system working as planned. Lots of people said it's never been tested, now it has.

This is/was sooo impressive. Incredible job, guys!
  • I wonder about big corporations/government entities running operations like this to anonymously target various protocols to test their resilience. The whole space is a battlefield of economic/energy warfare, espionage, etc.

Well-designed systems don't suffer and crash
  • This is what an antifragile network looks like, feel free to take notes 😎
