it's been 16 years since I first saw this clip and I have just about got the 'Ahoy, crew members' bit down.
  • @StephenJPilat
The string skipping bit...across the whole neck...just because he can...absolutely mindblowing
  • @joelshuman
The holy grail of shred tape intros. Thank you Levi
  • @jlynnb1
All these years later , even with how far guitar technique has advanced....this isn't even the slights bit less mind blowing than the first time I saw it. Insane.
  • Sometimes I forget how awesome Paul's vibrato is haha Certainly one of the most humble and nicest dudes in the guitar world as well
  • Back in the late ‘80’s I was fortunate enough to be in a band that opened for Racer-X in Arizona and got to see Gilbert perform in his heyday. Power drill and everything. Blew my mind.
  • Still one of the most jaw dropping intros ever in a tutorial tape…no delay, or reverb, no backing tracks…just pure unadulterated and CLEAN playing! Also the first guitar tape I owned, and still a favourite player and teacher. Paul knew that his students would watch it over and over again so he’s always included humour in his tapes I must have played this tape to death back in the day…even my mum knew half the dialogue (along with Michael Angelo Batio’s Star Licks VHS!) And the magic tricks in the style of Tommy Cooper (or Carl Ballantine, for Americans) still make me smile

I used to watching this intro along with the Yngwie REH video every day when I was at Berklee, I think my neighbors loved it b/c id hear them banging on the walls with excitement. PG Rocks!!!
  • I don't think I've played that many notes in my lifetime. Just wow!
  • @MrMetalhorse
The best part about this is that Paul himself shows you most licks here in the video. I do wonder how many people could actually play the entire thing as well as he does. I can do most of the licks by themselves cleanly but it's another level to combine everything so smoothly like that.
  • @AlefSousa017
I've lost count of how many videos I've seen of Paul Gilbert playing, and every single time I'm still amazed by his right hand technique, simply out of this world.
  • @MrRMB1
To be that young and have that much talent just blows me away! I remember when this came out. So glad that he was able to go so far in his career!
  • Mr. Clay, your skills are a reflection of what I aspired to as a younger man. Thank you for a great transcription of yet another video from my early years as a guitar lover.
  • Thank you so much for tabbing all of these out man! This is extremely helpful, so happy I found this channel
  • @rickclick8359
OMG I've waited 35 years for this transcription, thanks so much.
  • Can a intro to a guitar shred video get any sicker? Paul is truly scary on guitar!
  • @MrJoelkleber
Awesome video! I remember seeing this at 15 and completely blew my mind and was my first introduction to the REH videos. His artistworks school is awesome it's amazing you can video exchanges with him now regularly. Such a nice bloke as well. Thanks for tabbing this Levi!
  • I remember seeing this for the first time in like 2007 and my jaw dropped to the floor. He was unstoppable. Absolutely mind blowing picking skill. Thanks for the transcription!
