Blood and Cheese was way more brutal in the books. When the assassins get to Helena's chambers they tie her and Alicent up. They ask Helena to pick which of her sons they kill - the 6 year old Jaehaerys or 3 year old Maelor. Jaehaerys was the main target from the get go (not Aemond), they only gave her the illusion of a choice to torture her. When she refuses to pick they threathen her with raping her 6 year old daughter so she picks Maelor, hoping he'd be too young to understand what is happening. Blood then whispers into Maelor's ear "You hear that boy? Your mama wants you dead" and strikes off the head of Jaehaerys instead.

The intro is the history of House Targaryen - the Doom of Valyria, the Targaryen Conquest of Westeros, King Maegor dying on the Iron Throne, King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne's golden age, the Great Council of Harrenhal which we saw in the first episode, the beginning of the Dance of Dragons with the two factions on different sides of the table, Aegon and Rhaenyra on their thrones on opposite sides and then Lucerys and Arrax being killed by Aemond and Vhagar which started the civil war.

Rhaenys did have a good reason to not kill the Hightowers in season 1...she didn't declare for anyone at that time lol. Her plan was to just stay away from the conflict, and told Rhaenyra what the Hightowers did out of respect for her cousin. That explains the dragon scene during Aegon II's coronation. She only sided with the Blacks after her discussion with Corlys about Rhaenyra. Even Corlys thought they were going back home with their grandchildren, until Rhaenys convinced him to side with the queen.
