Serial Killer Documentary: Arthur "Killer Whale" Shawcross

Published 2022-03-29
Arthur John Shawcross, also known as the Genesee River Killer, was an American serial killer active in Rochester, New York.

His first known murders were in 1972 when he killed a young boy and a girl in his hometown of Watertown, New York. Under the terms of a plea bargain, Shawcross was allowed to plead guilty to one charge of manslaughter, for which he served 14 years of a 25-year sentence. He killed most of his victims in 1988 and 1989 after being paroled early which led to criticism of the justice system. A food service worker, Shawcross trawled the streets of Rochester in his girlfriend's 1984 sky blue Dodge Omni (later using her blue-grey 1987 Chevy Celebrity), looking for sex workers to kill.

Give this guy a rap name :) (Don't reply to this comment. Make a separate one, so people can upvote the good ones)
  • All these years later, I still can't understand how someone who killed 2 children, could get early release from prison?!?! Like WTF 🤬
  • It is sick that Arthur Shawcross, like so many other serial killers, had served prison time for murder, was released after a ridiculously short time, and went on killing many more people after his release. Scandalous.
  • I grew up in a suburb of Rochester. Worked just up the street from the Genessee River gorge. A Co-worker was a juror in the Shawcross trial. He said there was never much debate in deliberations and that they had really had to pay attention to some complex wording instructions from the Judge. Great video. Very accurate and thorough.

Some might be weirded out by this comment, but isn't it amazing how different the young Arthur Shawcross looked compared to his older self? They look like totally different people.
  • When they first let him out of prison the parole board placed him in my home town. When people found out who he was, what he had done they demanded that they move him somewhere else but the parole board refused. People took the matter into their own hands and showed up at his apartment and tried to break in to remove him themselves. Arthur called the police and begged them to save him. The police showed up and couldn't even get near the main entrance to the apartment because the crowd was so big. They had to go through the back ally and take him down the fire escape. The police had to cover him with a mattress to protect him from the rocks and bottles that were being thrown at him .

How the hell could this guy kill TWO children and then get out of prison, being touted as likely contributor to society? How does that happen? Look at the lives that were lost as at the hands of those fine servants of the community - in the DA's office, the judges that were involved and the people in the penal system who facilitated his release. They are as much to blame as Shawcross himself. These do-gooders are never held accountable for the pain to the victim's families and the havoc that results from their lenient decisions rooted in childish beliefs in rehabilitation. F*** rehabilitation. There is such a thing a restitution. You have to PAY for what you did. There is no justice without restitution and getting out of prison in a few years for murdering children, having been apparently plead down to manslaughter is NOT justice.

I think many people first think it's a mannequin because the truth is too horrific for them. They don't want to think it's a person and their brain compensates for that. Great video as always!
  • How is a child killer granted early release??? Mind numbing incompetence.

I knew two women who escaped Shawcross. The missing part in this doc is that the Social Work Department of SUNY Brockport organized protests to raise the profile of the victims and get something done. The police had not tried very hard until it became more public and protests drew attention to the problem. Basically, the misogynistic attitudes of the RPD made the deaths of prostitutes not very important to pay attention to. Drug addicts and prostitutes are people - someone's daughter, cousin, Aunt, mother. These murders could've been prevented.
  • Arthur is pure evil. I watched a video about him on interview with a serial killer and it was intense and unsettling to watch and listen to how he explained some of his murders like it was nothing. Looking forward to the video, keep up the great work.

Impossible to imagine, that a killer actually got let back OUT into society, back then!🤦‍♂️😖😡

SKD , your content is second to none. I appreciate the detail in every video. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for content creators to have to “ baby talk “ and sensor the weirdest things so the YouTube police don’t pull you over but you do it very well. Much love from Huntsville, Alabama, USA.
  • I’ve seen someone name another interview “Chinterview with a Serial Blinker” and I almost died laughing. Hands down best comment I’ve seen about old blinky
  • I watched an interview where he blinked the entire novel, “War and Peace” in Morse code.
  • Well done! This was really well researched and presented. I have seen a few other things on Shawcross, but none were this informative. I appreciate the attention given to the police work and court proceedings.

I've seen interviews with this guy but never actually learned about what he did. This is gonna be a good one. Thank you SKD for putting out such interesting content.
  • I'm glad you mentioned "the misbegotten son" to me its the best book written about this monster. I love all of Olson's books as well. Great vid. Thanks for your hard work ! Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
  • This guy is from my hometown and I never knew anything about him until I got into these type of documentaries. Granted I was a toddler when a lot of this happened

It's crazy to hear that one of the victim's pimps cried about her death. When you typically think of a pimp, you don't imagine that they actually care for their girls.
