What is your favourite ever World Cup semi-final?

This was in Napoli --- Diago Maradona said goodbye to Napoli in 1991 after seven glorious seasons in which they lifted the UEFA Cup, the Coppa Italia, two Serie A titles and an Italian Super Cup (they had not won the Scudetto before, nor have they since) Then in 1990 he helps to send Italy out in Napoli  Poor Diego was always a hero and a villian

My childhood 😢 Rest In Peace, The little Big Man! GOAT ❤️
  • Maradona played a very significant role to bulid his team's mental spirit in 1990 world Cup.

RIP Diego... We will remember and miss you... forever...

Argentina of 1990 was one of the most resilient teams of all times , all the odds were against them but they never quit and kept digging and almost won it with a less than average side full of injuries playing against amazing teams, I guess this is the mentality a legend like maradona plants in the mentality of the team.

We cried for you Diego the best player ever.

Maradona played the tournament with an injured ankle n still took the team to the final. In the final match Argentine had 5 players suspended in the Germans took advantage n scored a penalty. The funny thing is despite argentina missing first team players in the final, the Germans still couldn't score from the open play. Argentina under Maradona was a team to reckon with.
  • The way Maradona takes his penalty (with sheer ice cold calmness and by almost passing the ball into the net once he's sent the keeper the wrong way) is excatly how Messi took most of his penalties to help win Argentina this latest World Cup in 2022.....Looks like Messi and Maradona may have either spent a lot of time discussing this with each other before Maradona sadly passed away...or simply Messi watched and learned from Maradona (whom would have been a huge mentor for Messi anyway as he grew up and then became the world new best player)

I was little when I first saw Goyco's goalkeeping and was mesmerized with it. I have never lost that romanticism with Argentina team ever since the 1990 world cup. Literally cried over Argentina's defeat in the final while being in Frankfurt when the entire German nation was celebrating their victory.
  • 1990 was the last World Cup of the football that had a little bit of ice hockey vibes with players pushing and punching eachother. BRING THE FAIR VIOLENCE BACK
  • I remember those days of 1990 WC in kolkata India matches used to start around 11pm or 12 am at night ,we used to stay awake for Argentina ( read for diego mara) , was just 10 yrs

Maradona is a real monster. surrounded by 6 opponents and still managed to create an accurate passing.
  • Goycochea was magnificent in penalty, man, the last two saves were just incredible. As with saving Baggio's free kick!
  • Goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea's signature game for Argentina. Already with 3 clean sheets (1 of them against Brazil!) and a penalty shootout win against Yugoslavia, Goycochea does the near impossible: beats a superior host nation team in the penalty shootout, knocking Italy out of the tournament. Clearly the best Argentina keeper until Dibu Martinez (who also had 3 clean sheets and 2 shootout wins, including the championship match)

The most iconic penalty series ever.

Legendary Maradona!!!! Rest in power!! 🙌🏼
  • By no means a great Argentina team, but they had balls of steel. Mentally tough. Warriors.
