The PROBLEM with Black DC Heroes

Black DC characters have a lot of interesting lore behind them, with many adaptations existing in the CW Arrowverse, including Black Lightning, Static Shock, and Icon & Rocket appearing in Young Justice. The Flash and Arrow had interactions with characters like Mr. Terrific, Vixen, and Firestorm. John Stewart Green Lantern and Static were prominent characters in the DCAU, crossing over with Justice League Unlimited. Many Black DC characters aren't as well known due to a lack of exposure to the general public. Static, for example, was once a member of the Teen Titans in the comics. Milestone Media/Comics had a revival in 2020, with an animated movie announced, though there have been no updates since. WB/DC have an obsession with using their popular characters to conjure up ideas of Black superheroes like Calvin Ellis as Superman or Jace Fox as Batman. James Gunn's DCU has the opportunity to explore more Black characters with Lanterns and Superman.

It’s kinda frustrating when characters are race swapped when there are other notable characters who are people of color and are compelling.

They gave “Black Adam” and “Blue Beetle” a movie before Static in the height of “Mile Morales’” popularity. Heck they canceled “Batman Beyond” the animated movie during the that time as well.

Dwayne McDuffie died way too soon. He is a legend to me for his creation of Static and all these other amazing characters.
  • I'll prefer original black characters over race swapped characters any day.

The funny thing is that killer bee HAS LIGHTNING POWERS.
  • Another black comic character they forgot to mention that doesn't have lightning powers. Spawn but he is an image character, not dc or marvel.
  • Crazy part is Mr Terrific is the equivalent of Reed Richards, maybe even better, but he's nowhere near as important. Damn shame it is.
  • Vixen is so cool to me with her animal based powers and design. Needs more spotlight and love to learn of her villain cast. I think I only know queen bee

I think the loss of creators like Dwayne McDuffie has hurt not just the pushing of Black Characters in DC proper, but especially in animation where he would make sure to have some of the best written stories like Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock, even Young Justice, prominently feature black characters as major players or protagonists in the story.

Seeing Mr.Terrific in Arrowverse felt more like a crossover with The IT-Crowd, than the original character. Such a shame.

Black Lightning is uniquely positioned for a lot of meaningful stories. Being a respected black man that can touch many young teen lives as a principle would be like a playground for a lot of wholesome arcs
  • Black Lightning is majorly underutilized, he’s one of my favorite DC heroes and I wish him as well as the Outsiders in general got more attention.

Static Shock is the GOAT. Growing up with him and reruns of Spider-Man were awesome.

To be fair Static was one of the few Milestone characters that was kid-friendly. It's not like they could have made an animated TV show about Blood Syndicate. Maybe now but definitely not back then.

DC don't want to pay the Milestone creators their cut...that's the secret...that's all their is.

I’m still confused as to why DC never gave Static the push that Marvel gave Miles.

The static shock situation is kinda of a legal thing he is and isn’t in the DC comic but he’s kinda like miles morales where he’s is his own separate universe
  • @fittzie
To be fair, Static wasn't always a DC character
