Hello there !! Welcome to the 400mm f4.5 I hope you found this first look useful let me know if you have any questions!

One important factor is minimum focus distance, on the new 400mm is 2.5 meters, while the 100-400mm is 0.75 meter, that is substantial difference !! for butterflies, snakes , etc....

We are lucky to have someone with the access you do with the honestly you do. I look forward to every video you produce. Thank you for making them.
  • Of all the countless photo channels, yours is just one of the most important ones to me, at any given moment about any given lens or cam, but also over the years. There's just the needed amount of technical comparison (here under windy conditions, which I don't mind) but also a lot of technical-to-practical 'meta-talk', that I like. There's a profoundly professional photographer under the blogger that you are.

Thanks for sharing this Ricci, well done Nikon great addition to the range of z lenses. šŸ˜€šŸ‘šŸ‘
  • Thanks great video as always ordered mine today and added my NPS priority hereā€™s hoping I see it soon

I missed you my friend! Glad youā€™re back. Great test as always. Nice lens, but I got my Z100-400 about 3 weeks ago. And Iā€™m very happy with it on my Z6II. I like itā€™s flexibility, sometimes 400 mm are to much! Even in Kenya because sometimes the animals are closer than you would except. And I donā€™t like to switch lenses in dusty environment.
  • Great vid as always. Having the 100-400 and loving as you mentioned the versatility of it I don't think this lens has a spot in my kit but I 100% can see this lens being a nice lightweight option for alot of people! Nikon's rounding out that tele range nicely! Now bring on that 200-600 and 600/4
  • The lens looks so good, specially for the price! Canā€™t wait to see what itā€™s like with motorsport šŸ‘ŒšŸ»
  • Great addition, my set up is 800mm, 400mm and the 70-200 s lenses with the 1.4 tc. Gives lots of coverage and options.

Nice video, been waiting for this one, now just the 200-600, oh and the Z6 iii.
  • @andhib
Looks great. Thanks for useful review Ricci. Will be my next Z lens.

Great info and overview mate... keep it up! It'd be great to get a more detailed comparison between vthis lens and the 500 pf when you spend some more time with the lens. Cheers

Finally, a video that compares the three lenses. Good review. Would have loved to see samples of this 400mm paired with the TC1.4. Music choice, however, is questionable, repeating notes get annoying quick, I had to mute the video samples section. Keep up the good work.

This lens is going to be a big seller for Nikon. This is a brilliant move by Nikon. A 400 F/4.5 has a lot of possibilities. The 4.5 aperture is fast enough for lowlight sports and wildlife. With a 1.4x TC it is a very capable 560mm F/6.3 birding lens. If Nikon comes out with a mirrorless D500 replacement the demand for this will go off the charts. I already own the 100-400s lens so I will bypass this lens for the time being and wait for the "Z900" pro cropped sensor body. This lens would make a wonderful lightweight lens for a wildlife safari without breaking one's back and budget.

Extremely useful and honest review! I'm much more interested in seeing comparisons with a 1.4 TC than the less usable 2.0 TC, and I own the 500 PF and am interested in comparisons to that with and without 1.4 TC.
  • Very nice objective intro to this new lens Ricci. But a comparison between 400/ 1.4x TC vs 500PF missing! Also 300pf + 1.4 TC vs 400 would be v interesting as I owe that combo all the time. But no doubt you wanted to be able to do a second video. Fair play to you.
