If you position your lip like this😬 instead of thisπŸ˜—, the ich should come out okayπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ btw thank you :) this is exactly what beginners need to understand how to construct a soundπŸ™

If I (by the way being a German) had to teach the pronunciation of the ich-Laut to Anglophones, I would first remind them (you) how lots of people pronounce the "h" in English words like "huge", "human" or "Houston". Try it, it should work. Maybe the sound might also be explained as the unpitched version of a pitched "y" as in "yellow"...

That's the clearest explanation I've ever seen, thanks to you now I could pronounce it easily.

The pronunciation of "Ich" is the most basic and simple word in the German vocabulary and my dad still fucks it up and says "ish"
  • Please teach us more! It was easy and effective for me to pronounce the sound. Thank you

This was quite helpful. However, I picked up on something here that I've heard before (or perhaps I'm hearing something that isn't there). A native German will say that there is no "s" sound in the German "ch"..."ich" isn't "ish"; but then proceeds to give examples where an "s" sound seems to be subtly involved. Or sometimes a subtle "sh" sound. For example in the list of six words here that begins with "Recht" I hear an "s" or "sh" sound in Mr. Tsanov's pronunciation of five of them, in particular in "riech" and the "dich" in "Ich liebe dich." Does anybody else hear this?

  • I swear god I could not pronounce it before, but after doing the hie-jie trick something clicked and I can now say it. It's like you unblocked my tongue.

I've a dublinese Irish accent, and there are so so many sounds we culturally can't pronounce, even in English; "th" for example. Is there any advice you could give on pronouncing 'ch' in German if you're familiar with the Dublin/Irish accent?
