I’ve lapped a bunch of 12-14th gen chips with the lapping tool and never had this happen. He must have been pretty tough on it or something.

I understand why people do lapping specifically on 13/14th gen, but still, I'd never risk it. If something only goes wrong 1 in 100 times, it'll be me lol. And wow those caps are microscopic, incredible work. You have REALLY stable hands .

Have a look at the Grizzly kit, then the missing SMDs. It's overengineered for this not to happen at all. No way this damage was done using the kit. Having a look at the kit will be a real eye opener given the damage you can see.
