A circus ape, confined to his cage, years for freedom. With no actual way out, he falls back on his imagination, using a rock to etch out a better life on the walls and floor of his confinement.
This was among the shortest RIT films I ever scored, one that moves swiftly and suddenly to convey the harsh contrast between our simian protagonist's cold reality and warm imagination. As this movie is both wordless and soundless, I knew that the music would have to tell the story as much as the visuals, and given that the ape is the sole character, every idea I had played into his thoughts and feelings - his despair, his creativity, his excitement, and everything else in-between. All this made for an exhilarating writing process, and I am happy to say that the end result pleased Thomas and I.
