Hand-Building Pottery At Home - Easy Peasy Mug

Published 2022-06-29
You can make beautiful and functional pottery at home using just your hands and simple tools. This video will take you from a lump of clay to a finished, usable mug using only tools you have at your house or can easily buy at a nearby store. Hand built pottery is made without the use of a potters wheel but in this case I have taken it a step farther using only a knife, a gift card and a spoon to form a mug. Afterwards I fire this mug in my yard without a kiln using a few bricks and charcoal.

I'm just getting into pottery with my sole intent to do it along the lines of how ancient peoples would of made/used it. Your channels has given me a ton of useful information. Love the channel and thank you for the inspiration!
  • Extra thanks for the bit on sealing and then using the raw fired clay. Much on my mind as I was gifted some unglaze drinking cups. So many cultural and historic pots, essential through the millennia for our existence. Now we don't even know we can use them. By using them I like the connection to the pot and our past. Nice short you did on the subject too.

i have had good success with white commercial pottery clay, medium temperature, made into a slip and used as white paint. my daughter gave me a small ball of it which will last me a long time, it goes a long way. the pottery store here only sells in a huge quantity, see if you can find someone to give you a small amount to use as paint. i still had to process it into a smooth slip, Andy shows how to make slip in his videos. watch them all they are great.

I drink black coffee. I going to make some mugs. I have some slip I made from my old grey clay , some red clay and some raku clay that has sand. Great video !

I'm so excited to hear that pottery can be easily made at home! I've been wanting to get into it for a while but don't really have the funds to justify taking a pottery class or buying the materials myself. Especially cool that these are ancient techniques as well.
  • @glasgavlen
This is so easy to follow, and what a lovely mug!
  • I had never appreciated the importance of getting the rim nice and wet and sloppy until now. Thanks Andy.
  • My granddaughter and I are so fascinated with how you work of the earth to create such beautiful items, so talented.
  • Hold up! When did I miss your video about the oatmeal?! I don't remember you trying that when you were experimenting with sealing earthenware. Seems to work well!!
