Panait has so much control over Nadia by threatening to send her back. Of course he wanted the money he could make off of her. She didn't know what freedom was and didn't know that she was free to leave and Panait wasn't going to let her talk to anyone that might tell here otherwise. All she had ever known was to obey. Most Americans having never lived under a dictator, find if hard to believe that Panait could have so much control over Nadia. After all, most every American girl or woman over the age of 12, would have told him to go suck an egg and left. And, she would have screamed or called the police if Panait had physically tried to stop her. If he used forced, he would be arrested and most likely convicted for assault and/or kidnapping.
