DragonKeeper Film Rants | The Little Mermaid (2023)

Life under the sea isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The live action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid is unfortunately plagued by many of the same issues we've already seen with earlier remakes. Many of the changes to the source material's plot and scenes diminish the narrative impact of the original, and the cast is very hit and miss. While actors Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy turn in strong performances, other actors like Javier Bardem and Daveed Diggs fail to bring the same life to their roles and can only pale in comparison to the original actors. The romance between the two leads is charming and well done, but the movie takes too long to find its momentum. While the second half of the movie is a marked improvement from the first, it isn't enough to wash away the bad taste left in viewers' mouths from too many baffling choices early on. While Halle Bailey's star power and her chemistry with costar Jonah Hauer-King are able to elevate it some, the movie ultimately feels like a marked downgrade from the original.

About Ariel’s red hair I heard different Ariel was originally blonde but they changed to red after another late 80s mermaid movie called “Splash” came out where the mermaid had blonde hair. Diseny didn’t want comparisons
  • The Musical Numbers sounded like bad Karaoke, most of the Original Dialog from the Cartoon was Gone replaced with Brand new Lines. And oh my Goodness the Song lyrics changed. Erick being Adopted, Ariel the Hero. It's was Bad.

Was hoping the movie would turn out to be at least better than just decent, but oh well. Really dreading the live action Lilo and Stitch movie even more now.
