Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, hormonal symptoms, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.

As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care.

Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health.

Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee.

Boy wouldn’t it be awesome to have Dr Barnard for your family doctor?! He’s such a kind soul 💜
  • By chance I attended a talk given by Dr Barnard sponsored by Vitamix. I had been struggling with my diabetes and weight loss. When it was over I bought his book and read it cover to cover. I'm an all or nothing person so I cleared my house of anything not vegan, spent hours at the grocery reading labels and 6 months later I was down 70 pounds. Yes in 16 years I've not always been vegan but I never gained that 70 pounds back and I thank Dr Barnard every day.

Dr Barnard has such a pleasant demeanor. I enjoy listening to him talk. I’m drinking Ceylon cinnamon tea as I watch. So delicious! 1 + tsp cinnamon, 12 oz hot water, 4 oz organic soy milk stir well!

Thank you for being completely transparent about the dairy industry!

Thank you chef AJ. I love each guest you have on your youtube . I just adore listening to Dr Barnard . I often listen to his cheese trap talks and read his book . So difficult here in Switzerland 🇨🇭 in the Valais Swiss Alps , I am surrounded with cheese or meat . So dr Barnard you have helped me to stay so far away from cheese .

The dairy industry is one of the cruelest! 😭I cry every time I think about it. I wish more people were aware.

So glad to hear about dairy products, even though I am elderly. I had cut back on dairy in this last 9 months as I was continually clearing my throat, it’s made a huge difference

I just love chef AJ and doctor Neal Barnard 🙏for all your wonderfull inspiration - 30 years ago I was healed very fast from hot flashes just by eating a strict Japan inspired whole food plant based diet, brown rise, millet, oats, vegetables, a bit of fruit , miso soup, no Oil and a very small almond of Almonds or seam seeds, not eating later than 6 pm and no fruit in the evening) - for me it solved all problems within a few days 🎶 🍀🎵💚🙂

I saw a direct relation to hot flashes with intake of sugar. I could bring one on minutes after eating sugar. If I avoided sugar…no hot flashes. I’ve controlled them 100% this way.
  • @beaglemom63
The half cup of soybeans a day worked like magic for me, thank you for that study!
  • The Exam Room podcasts changed my life! I am so grateful for Dr Barnard and all of his tireless research and work. As kind and generous in person as on the podcasts!
  • @jgrysiak6566
Thank You for challenging him Chef on "Keeping oils low", rather than omiting them entirely. I was a fat vegan following his philosophy!
  • @tracyhuckaby5876
Thank you for sharing. One of my favorite breakfasts is potatoes, red cabbage, and yellow squash.

Thank you for a great interview, both of you! Love both of you, as you give out such great information and base it on science. Having been on a WFPB diet for going on 6 years, I've seen a reversal of several conditions that were becoming chronic. Including anxiety and depression. My life and energy is so much better now. I am in a healthy weight range with a BMI of just under 23, and am 66. Altogether, I've lost a bit over 50 lbs, over these past few years. Adding intermittent fasting this last year has also helped. Grateful for this way of life! And grateful to all the wonderful podcasts like this one, for accurate and helpful information and motivation to stick with it!
