Percy Jackson And The Olympians (Ep. 1-2) REVIEW - Thoughts From A Newcomer

Publicado 2023-12-17
I was curious to try this one as someone who has not read the book... here's my thoughts.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an upcoming American fantasy television series created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg for Disney+, based on the book series of the same name by Riordan. Walker Scobell stars as Percy Jackson, alongside Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri.

Development on the series began by May 2020, following a pitch by Riordan to Disney Branded Television. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were announced as showrunners in July 2021, with James Bobin hired to direct the first episode in October. Scobell was cast in the lead role in January 2022, with Jeffries and Simhadri joining the cast in May. By September, Anders Engström and Jet Wilkinson were also set to direct multiple episodes of the series. Filming began in June 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia and concluded in February 2023, with additional cast members revealed throughout 2022 and 2023.

  • The thing about the characters in pjo is that throughout the book series, quite a few characters that appear 2D in the first book or first few books (one’s that are important to the story) get fleshed out by the end of book 5. Clarisse is a character that starts as a stereotypical bully (in the book she’s actually really buff, like cartoonishly buff for someone of her age) but even during the second book she gets character development. I think to view the characters now as what they are supposed to end up as is wrong. View these characters like you would view Draco Malfoy (as you mentioned Harry Potter in the video) Draco in the first film or two is pretty bland as a character, but as the movies go on you start to see his true character: scared child whose being forced to be on the side of a homicidal maniac. There is more to the characters and so since the show is a series and the books are a series the character development doesn’t happen very quickly.

Every reviewer seems to have opposing views on the pacing, half say it's too fast, half say it's too slow. Very strange phenomenon. I don't really understand the costume complaint, as they're supposed to be normal clothes. In terms of bully characters being fleshed out, it's important to keep in mind that the first 2 episodes correlate to about 1/4th of the first book in a 5 book series. To keep the Harry Potter comparison going, that would be like complaining that Draco Malfoy isn't fleshed out enough in the first 30 minutes of the first Harry Potter movie. It just seems like a strange complaint. (Not that Clarisse is anything like Draco Malfoy, but just for reference.)
  • I’m not sure how good of an idea this is, but maybe read the books to compare them with the show? (I didn’t watch your video, because I want to see this show for myself.) I’m currently RE-reading the books in anticipation for this show. I just hope the show does a better job at portraying the characters than the movies did. Because the movies were VERY inaccurate…to both the characters and the plot. (The animations/effects were great, but it felt like they wanted the movie to be cool, and didn’t really care about the plot.😅)
