Welcome to our YouTube channel, solely dedicated to words.

Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.

Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.

Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.

East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.

Today's word is COFFEE.

"A coffee a day keeps a grumpy away"! Don't know who said that but well said!
  • Beautifully explained, reading your book this morning in Malaysia , The Forty Rules of Love ❤️
  • Hi Elif, I watched your videos about accent and public speaking. Would you like to make a video about your English writing journey? As we know, it's not your mother tongue, and it's fair to say that mastering writing in a second language is more difficult than speaking it.
  • When you talk about coffee you talk about caffeine because without it its just a dark shitty weird water and no one will drink it. Caffeine is the biggest scam in the world just like everybody thought smoking is amazing 40 years ago and no we know the truth the same is gonna happen with caffeine. It taste amazing and makes you feel amazing and connects people together but it has a huge price no one is talking about yet. Great video though 👌 thanks

Sufi mystics were also great coffee aficionados. Buddhist scholars along the Silk Road liked tea. Caffeine is at the root of not just European Enlightenment, but also of the great philosophical traditions developed in the East. Without this elixir of the gods, we would just be plain barbarians.

Interesting you said coffee also consumed by women back then. Years ago, my aunt from Vietnam came to stay with me, when she saw that I drink coffee daily, she said to me women shouldn't drink coffee. I thought what backward thinking norm they have.

I personally don't like and don't drink coffee. I prefer to take my caffeine from Coke or to have a cup of tea.
