I remember this guy when he was a skinny minny kid and we happened upon the festival while on a vacation. I think I have a CD from then somewhere. Ended up staying in the area for three nights. It's definitely a different sound than what I hear in the Ozarks but great talent nonetheless. Thanks for posting.

the waltz is Rachel Ann. it says so on the cd package

The first one is Dusty Miller and the third one is New Camptown Races (a Randy Howard tune). No idea what the waltz is...

He's awesome!:) I play fiddle too!!!!!!!!:)

Great Texas style fiddling. Old time? This is very modern sounding. Just shows that when you tack the word "Contest" on the end, you get all kinds. I'm not hating just wish "old time" still meant old time. Mandolin player Frank Wakefield wrote New Camptown Races. And, yes, you SHOULD hear Tristan on cello. So cool.

@fiddlestar3 the waltz is a tune written by the Billy Contreras. I'm pretty sure it's called the Wedding Waltz but I'm not 100% on the name.

If you think that's cool, you should see him on a cello!

the contest is mislabled. You are right it is not old-time.

It may not be old time buy if it weren't for this kind of music the kids wouldn't even bother to pursue fiddling and the music would die out totally. I appreciate old time fiddling for being the base upon which better music is being built. If you ask any accomplished fiddle player to play Soldiers Joy in a plain and simple manner, trust me they could do it in their sleep. Why have a contest to find out who can play a song like the old timers did around a camp fire? BORING!!
