Coury and Try go over what it's like to get started with the MiSTer FPGA project in 2022 - the parts you need, the processes required to set it up, what you need to do to get great audio and video, and what kinds of fun things you can do with the many console, computer, handheld, and arcade cores! You might just see that it isn't nearly as hard as you thought it was!

  • Also a heads up for everyone looking to buy/make one. Don't buy from a scalper unless you absolutely need one now. The DE-10 Nano is always being made and coming back in stock. Patience will save you a ton of money
  • I had a really difficult childhood in a not very structured familly and the opportunity of revisiting all the good (only) memories that my broken NES and my favourite arcades gave to me is like putting all the good moments in a little box and treasure them for good. Thanks.
  • @Carbine64
"We'd be here for another 15 hours if we gave each and every one a deep dive". You guys are one of the few creators that I wouldn't mind the idea of watching 15 hours of them talk about technical information. Excellent video, and keep up the good work!
  • @steve43ful
THANKS for warning people about the “Switch to USB” menu option, they should just get rid of that or hide it in a submenu or something.
  • @AyeYoYoYooo
These dudes make the most sincere, detailed, comprehensive, informative and descriptive videos possible, in the retro game scene. Props! 🤙🏽
  • @RedWolfy7
This is the one that's going to cement your legacy as great game preservationists for years to come. You can really tell that this video was a sincere labor of love not only because of its mammoth length but because the nerdy glee that radiates from your presentation of the systems nuance and cores is very infectious. I'm proud of you two and also proud to support you guys. Great job!
  • @GabrielLaFlex
I bought a mister last year and it changed my life in so many ways. I honestly didn't even understand what a CRT television did but I bought the full mister kit with analog board just the same. Realizing I had paid extra for the mister with analog output inspired me to actually get a CRT tv to "try it out," and now I'm all the way down the rabbit hole. Fast forward to today and I now own a 27" JVC D Series CRT television, rotatable LCD screens for tate games, and even a home built arcade cabinet to plug the mister into. I have retired my PSP dock and PSP TV now thanks to the core updates. I have even gotten into collecting classic controllers such as the SNES mouse, light guns, a negGcon, and more. This has been an adventure and it's still going. I could keep telling stories for pages and new stories are still being made.
  • @Voultar
This was an AMAZING episode. Great work & strap on always!
  • This is one of the biggest deep dives I've seen on the Mister. I want to aspire to be as thorough as you guys one day. The amount of work and dedication you put into making videos is insane. The amount of B-roll you shoot, all the sound effects and music you layer, all the transitions, it's mind boggling. Bravo!
  • @WalrusFPGA
Hands-down the best overview of MiSTer to date. Thanks for taking your time and doing it right! Considering the length, the clever sequencing with console/core features between the technical bits kept it engaging and entertaining 'til the very end. Great work!
  • @Chariblaze
1:32:20 This single NES audio comparison is what I love about watching MLiG! Perfect snippet to compare -- familiar song, and a part that lends itself well to looping. The timing of the changes is so right, it's as if it was a real nine second repetitive NES loop heh. And the attention to detail of using the four characters for the four samples.. 👍
  • Funny experience I had with MiSTer (as a someone who is fairly non-technically inclined) is that I had tried rpi before and couldn’t get my head around how to utilize it well… all these different images available etc, I never really got it going. But when I grabbed my first MiSTer a couple years ago it clicked right away. I’ve found it really straightforward to use and the community has been so awesome with any questions or issues I ran up against.
  • @CliffWheeler
Just as an FYI for everyone, when you’re in the video processing and audio processing menus, you can use the L and R trigger buttons to quickly switch between the options one at a time without opening the menus. Just highlight the menu options (example “GS_Sharpness_050.txt”) and press the triggers to quick switch to the next / previous options Just a nice quality of life option when you wanna make quick changes
  • @BrunoFonsecaPT
Two notes: First the ZX Spectrum did not have different processor speeds. That’s a novelty on the FPGA implementation mainly used to accelerate 3D games. Second, the stereo separation on the Amiga can already be “fixed” on the audio menu by enabling stereo mixing at 25% or 50%. Otherwise what an absolutely amazing video (as always). Cheers
  • @LusRetroSource
Great video! You guys never disappoint. I agree with using softer scaling with scanlines, it's the look I prefer when I actually play games through HDMI. Thanks for mentioning me too, you guys are awesome!
  • @patrickbvick
I'm not exactly a novice Mister user and I learned several things here! Great video guys.
  • Thank you for mentioning something about sound. While everyone just lets 48kHz ride, people either forget or are too young to know that the majority of consumer Arcade and TV speakers were straight garbage. More fidelity does not equal better in this case. Actually, the longer waveforms in lower frequency sounds produced by low quality drivers were perfect for noisy environments since they have the power to resonate through the noise (think about bass in music). Back when emulation was new, I started to set NES game audio to mono, 8-bit (22 kHz) and older arcade games to mono, 4-bit (11 kHz) and they’d sound perfect on regular headphones. 1:29:47 I see what you did there. Thanks for the MiSTer deep dive MLiG! This will definitely open some minds!
  • @tilla77
I own most retro consoles but I love the mister and its versatility. Just the amount it does in such a small footprint along with having the ability to scale when using a monitor that supports 480p is awesome. Built some controller boards for old joysticks and pads for minimal lag and the experience is no different from the real thing and in many cases the pixel clarity, through RGB, looks better to me. The fact too that it has such a large dev community makes it incredibly exciting as new implementations come out. I'd say its my device of the decade.
  • @SUPERFOX5Gaming
I know this video is over a year old, but I was able to set up a brand new MiSTer, and I do not regret it at all. Thanks for making this video streamlining the process and making it easier!
  • @niemasd
I listen to your live streams while I work, and I know from those that making this video was difficult for both of you, so I just wanted to express my gratitude for everything you do! You're awesome, and I really appreciate how accessible yet entertaining you make these topics! Thanks, both, for your hard work 😄
