It used to be "Better Ingredients, Better Pizza." But is this pizza chain sliding off the rails like a slab of melted mozzarella? Hold onto your pepperoni, this is the shady side of Papa Johns' menu.

Are you a fan of the food at Papa Johns?

I've never defended Papa John's and I never will, but when I make pizza at home, the dough is always made ahead and cold risen in the fridge for a few days. That allows the dough to autolyse and develop good gluten structure without kneading and that deeper, yeasty flavor. This is desirable.

Anchovies are packed in salt before being canned. The can sit at room temperature for months without spoiling. A lot of the employee comments about ingredients are coming from people who do not cook, or at least don't know much about cooking. Fun fact: EVERYTHING contains chemicals. That's literally what the universe is made of.
  • Ate PJ against my will and better judgment back in 2015, came down with food poisoning lasting 2 days. They will NEVER see me again.

A former domino's employee, we charged for parm packets and actually upsold bottles, even if the customer didn't realize they were being charged for a bottle

Some explanation on the "fresh dough" thing: the dough is as fresh as it could be. The dough needs time to proof (to properly form, rise). A better pizza dough is one you give a few hours to days for the right baking texture. For most pizza chains that still hand-toss dough, it's usually within a 3-5 day period. For Pizzerias worth their salt, they also follow this general rule. Even with that in mind you still need to wait for the dough to reach room-temp or near room temp. Every pizza chain will have their own metrics for "the perfect dough". If you ever received a pizza and it was too tough or smelled unintentionally like sour-dough, it's because it was either used before or after the "recommended use" time.

I used to love Papa John's but I find it expensive. My pizza is BBQ sauce, grilled chicken, pineapple 🍍 and bacon 🥓 and, I liked their garlic knots. I used to like Classic: Pepperoni, green peppers and bacon 🐽

Yall do realize that Pizza hut, Domino's or any pizza chain don't make they're dough on site🤦🏾

What's wrong with the cup shaped pepperoni? Marco's Pizza sells them as an upscale pizza topping. Yeah, they're greasy, but pepperoni is supposed to be greasy. So what's the deal?
  • I haven’t had papa John’s in the longest. The only thing i can remember is that garlic butter sauce, the pepperoncinis and the unique way the sausage topping tastes

We had not had Papa John's for quite awhile and ordered one last week. Everyone thought it just isn't as good as we remembered. When we were done eating, everyone agreed probably never order again, too bad it used to be awesome pizza.
  • Lafayette Louisiana home to me their Papa John's pizza is bomb of a good pizza ❤

What can you expect from a major chain? If you want good, fresh pizza get it from your local mom and pop place.
