Kusum (Hema Malini), as a child, marries Vrindavan (Jeetendra). After some time, her father dies in a riot and blame erroneously comes to Vrindavan's father. Due to this, Vrindavan's father rejects Kusum to be his daughter-in-law. Kusum, along with her brother and mother moves to a different village away from Vrindavan's family. Now they grow up and Kusum considers herself as the wife of Vrindavan and refuses to marry anyone else. Eventually, her mother dies and her brother Kunj (Asrani) stays single as he doesn't want to marry until he sends his sister to her in-laws. On the other side, Vrindavan's father dies and he becomes a doctor. Oblivious to Kusum's feelings, he goes on to marry another girl, Lakhi (Sharmila Tagore), who was also a victim of child marriage and has no one now. They have a son, Charan (Master Raju) and Lakhi dies after some time due to illness. He moves to his own village and starts a practice there. Once he happens to visit a wealthy patient in Kusum's village where Kusum recognizes him, though he fails to as he only knows her pet name, not real name. Gradually, they come closer and Vrindavan's mother is happy to accept Kusum as her daughter-in-law. But misunderstandings develop because Kusum considers them insensitive as they not only forgot what they had done to her family, but also take her for granted now. But Vrindavan, having a soft corner for her still wishes that she would come to him. Kusum grows close to his son Charan and keeps him with her during endemic in Vrindavan's village. Finally, Vrindavan and Kusum are able to overcome egoistic barriers and unite with the blessings of her brother, Vrindavan's mother and little Charan.

ऐसा ही फिल्म संस्कार को दर्शाता है और सही राह दिखाता था लेकिन आज की फिल्म नंगापन और अश्लीलता को समर्पित है इस लिए मैंने हिंदी मूवी को बाय करके साउथ को इन कर लिया काश बालीवुड की L लग जाए तो खुशी होगी

जिस प्रकार से मध्यम स्वर पर न्यास के बाद पंचम स्वर की आस तीव्र हो उठती है और निषाद स्वर तक पहुंचते पहुंचते एक टीस में परिवर्तित हो जाती है, उसी तरह की अनुभूति इस फिल्म के पूर्ण होने तक बनी रही। बचपन में सिनेमा हॉल में देखी थी, बाद के वर्षों में दूरदर्शन पर भी देखी थी, फिर भी यह कालजयी शरदचंद्र जी की रचना, गुलज़ार द्वारा अत्यंत संवेदना के साथ छायांकित करी हुई, जब भी देखता हूं, हर बार एक नई छाप छोड़ जाती है।

समाज की घडी ठीक करना है तो ऐसी बेहतरीन कथा की फील्में बार बार बनना बहूत जरुरी है, नायक और नायिका की आंखो से छलकता प्यार यंहा के मिट्टी की असली सुगंध है, बेहतरीन कलाकार, बेहतरीन फील्मांकन और बेहतरीन दिग्दर्शन इस फिल्म को और उंचाई तक ले जाते है।

मैंने ये मूवी आज दूसरी बार देखी है। हेमाजी का अभिनय और संवाद के समय उनके चेहरे के भाव अद्भुत लगे, आंखों में आंसू आ गए।

I watched this movie when I was in school 50 years ago and still remember it vividly. Such was the quality of the '70-'75 bollywood drama movies. Just watched it after decades and it still moved me emotionally. Lots of love from Pakistan. Wish I could turn back the clock.
