Every Saturday morning, rain or shine, Swetha and Venkat Raju set up a small food tent on the corner of Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. And, without fail, a line forms way before the husband and wife duo has even fired up the hot plates. People from far and wide are hooked on Swetha’s dosas, a South Indian breakfast food that has become the star of Swetha and Venkat’s food business, Brooklyn Curry Project. Over the years, the couple has built a tight-knit community of customers turned friends — exactly what they were first looking for when they moved from Bangalore, India, to Brooklyn just a handful of years ago. In addition to managing a part-time food business, Swetha and Venkat still work 9-to-5 jobs and are parents to two kids. Follow along as Swetha flexes her creative prowess with themed dinner popups and the family works toward its goal of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant one day.

The reason they will be successful is because she is an extremely positive person, like sunlight in a room. My mom always said, when you cook with love, it shows in the food.

First of all: the food looks incredible, and it's only bolstered by the awesome family providing it. Seriously cool, wish them nothing but success.

Beyond all the protest and chaos, I watch this video, the potato farmer opening his heart to an Indian immigrant couple, a software engineer turning into a dosa lady, locals appreciating their hard work, the American dream is still alive and kicking! Lets keep it that way aieh!

I'm a very old man and I could never understand why some people in this country hate immigrants so much. Immigrants add so much to our culture that is interesting, vibrant, and valuable (and not just their food, either . . . although that's a huge plus: those dosas look delicious).

  • That dosa looks legit like the ones served in iconic dosa places in Bengaluru! Wishing the Rajus all the success, and hope to try their dosas sometime :)

Brooklyn project should include filter coffee, which goes well with dosas and idlis. Medu vada with idlis would go really well with samba.

They are such a beautiful family, and I loved how they use the concept of 'community' in almost every sentence.
