My father was Vietnam Vet, earned Purple Heart and Bronze star in combat and was paralyzed from waist down from the war. As a kid I always thought it was neat to see him fist pump and sing along when this song played. He passed away 23 years ago and when I hear this song, I now fully understand why he loved this song. RIP Dad, I miss you!

I’m not even from the USA, and nor was I alive in the 80s, but this song makes me want to tear up just because of the incredible passion and unity that it brings

0:28...That has to be an amazing feeling for any musician on stage with the entire crowd just screaming the lyrics of a song that one day you just sat down and decided to write

I remember watching a tribute concert or something on television when my dad heard this song for the very first time. He was a Vietnam veteran who served three voluntary tours in Vietnam. When Bruce Springsteen came on the television, the singing this song my dad started crying so I paused the TV and asked him “dad what’s the matter? What’s wrong? “ Wiping tears from his eyes my father looked over at me and said “I had friends who died at Keh Sahn.” Every time I hear this song I will think of my dad. All I can say is thank you Bruce for your beautiful art. Your poetry is entirely American, one part protest and one part patriotism.
  • I never liked concerts live. But I once went with my wife to a concert by the Boss in Bercy, Paris. The lights went off and the, in the dark, he started singing this song. Is till remember the incredible impression. Will never forget it. He is really the boss

When you can get thousands of people in another country to sing born in the USA now that is powerful

I instantly became a Bruce Springsteen fan when I was nine years old in 1980 and heard him sing The River. I cried. My two musical heroes are Freddie Mercury and this guy. I've been lucky enough to see Bruce live twice!

His emotions and energy can be felt in each accord and word! He was angry, simply angry about what was happening around. I love his passion and genuineness!!!
