Welcome to our YouTube channel, solely dedicated to words.

Say Your Word is a digital platform by the acclaimed novelist, storyteller and women’s rights activist Elif Shafak.
A platform for words and anyone who cares about them.

Language is the key to understanding and unlocking our world.
It is also the key to the human heart.

Words are often said to have power.
What is not said that often is that they can hurt and even spread hatred and hostility, just like they can heal and bring about love, empathy and wisdom.
They can divide, distance and "dehumanise", just like they can connect and “rehumanise" those who have been dehumanised.

East and West, North and South, regardless of race, sex, gender, colour, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other category, we are all made of stories.
Stories bring us together, untold stories keep us apart.

Today's word is IDENTITY.

There is a Welsh word "Cynefin" which means something like "the place of your multiple belongings". This would be a great word to explore especially when how it relates to our multiple identities.
  • Thank you, Elif, for speaking from the heart of many. I'm glad I discovered your channel, I love listening to you as much as I love reading your books.

I'm at a loss for words and that is very unusual I'm very impressed
  • Wonderfully perceptive . I too have dual nationality and have lived in a different country from where I was born for fifty years .I used to feel disadvantaged ,my soul in one place ,my heart in another ,and it was very painful . Only recently have I begun to appreciate how enriched I am in fact, my glass half full ,not half empty .I have four eyes to see the world ,not two . Thankyou Elif .

You say is so eloquently. I blurt it out as "I'm mixed" | or a variation of: I'm "American-Aussie-Polish-Turk" | I'm " Eurasian" | I'm "European-Middle Eastern" ... I sound American, I am a Polyglot, I speak Polish, Turkish, Russian, French and also I've lived a bit in India, Japan, France - so I connect with Indian, Japanese and French culture on a deeper level than a tourist would almost like a person distantly ethnic from these cultures. I also connect with Latin America due to family being intermarried... I'm also very familiar with UAE as some family immigrated there and I have over the last decade been visiting them.... I feel global... and my identity is always one that I cannot say I am just one of. I also like to answer as if I am "A cultural cocktail", that is a frequent self-description.

I don't know from where I started to write my comment, My first intraction with Elif Shafak as reader was with her book Forty rules of love... This is another story that how that book make me a different person but at that moment I also searched that who is the author of that book, because a normal or ordinary writer can't write that kind of book... From there I start reading your books.. How you write how you explain the things even a little information and words.. This channel is just a glimpse of that.. And I'm really happy that you started a Youtube channel... Your way f explanation, your style your voice and your accent ( haha yes although it is not just your identity) in short lot of good wishes and respect for you. Your Fan, follower and reader from Pakistan 🇵🇰.

Oh! how I dread to be asked "where are you from?" You nailed exactly what identity is for me.
