Looking Out (Poem)

I've learned a lot about myself when I started looking out
I've witnessed so much elegance when I quit blinding myself with artificial lights that my eyes mistook for necessity
And my brain feened for a dose of dopamine if I stayed away a moment too long
Back then, life was dull
Back then, the sound of the ecstatic morning birds cheering for the great light in the sky as it rose were drown out by my thoughts curious to know how many likes my photo got
Back then, the lack off life experience was filled up with infinite mind numbing videos and photos sending myself down a rabbit hole
I took for granted the blessing and gift of each new day
The profound transition from quiet cold darkness to the joyful warmth of the greatest gift life has to offer
The gift that gives us the freedom to enjoy and play with life's magnificent toys
And not to fry our eyes and break our backs for a little paper to pay our taxes
That has us aching at a desk believing the illusion that money creates happiness
Believing the illusion that your country was created by man and you must worship it as if foreign land is evil
And the line that divides implies opposing beliefs gives us the right to treat them as enemies
And you hold your heart to a flag that has grabbed your own soul so you act as a slave as they control every fiber of your being
A sheep to the shepherd listening to every word as if its fact

I learned a lot about myself when I started looking within
